What would happen if I use a GTX 980 in SLI with a GTX 970?

I want to run a triple Asus Rog Swift monitor setup. I already have an Asus GTX 970. I'm particular about GSync which is only available on display port. So, can I buy a GTX 980 and use it's 3 DPs, while the GTX 970 in SLI would help provide the required pixel power?

Thank you for the clarification disturbed force. I didn't know what to Google to get an answer to that. Theonerm2, I understand your point. But I won't be able to use Gsync with 2 970s as I'd have only 2 Display ports then, right? How do I solve that problem? Or is it not a problem worth solving?

You're going to need a third GTX 970 in order to run Gsync on your 3 monitors if each GTX 970 only has 1 display port. You could buy a GTX 980 and connect its display ports to each monitor but your GTX 970's wouldn't do anything. The games will only run off the GTX 980 in that case. That might change in Directx 12 but for now that's the way it works. The best thing you can do in this situation is to buy another GTX 970 and have tri sli along with gsync.

Uhh... I don't think that exists renz496. Hence the dilemma. But thanks anyway. I guess I'll switch my 970 with a 980. That way, when I do plan to buy another pair of monitors, I'll be covered to some extent.

They indeed exist. You just need to look one with 3DP output. Even my 960 Strix have 3DP output. Nvidia starts putting 3 DP as a reference design with 900 series to make it possible to run Surround GSync over a single card. While it is a standard on reference design nvidia did not force board partner to follow it. Hence some board partner still opt to use combination like 2 DVI, 1 Hdmi ane 1 DP
