Question What would the benefit of upgrading PSU be for me?

Hi all,

I just built a new system for myself but didn't have remaining budget for a new power supply.

Soon I will have but was wondering the general benefits of this would be and if I would notice a difference in computer performance/reliability before I swap out my current PSU.

I was considering a Corsair RM850 or 850x depending on availability. If there's any other recommendations that would suit my system better, please feel free to suggest.

My current system is:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9900X
Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer III RGB 360mm
RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 6000MHz 2x32GB
Mbd: GIGABYTE X870 Aorus Elite Wifi7 ICE
GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 3060 - 12GB Gaming
PSU: Corsair CS650M
SSD: 990 PRO 1TB M.2 & 980 PRO 500GB M.2
Fans: 1x NZXT 120mm Rear Fan, 2x 140mm underneath fans and 3x NZXT model 120mm’s.
Case: NZXT H6 Flow

Thanks,
Lewis

You'd get a lot of piece of mind because throwing this much PC at a PSU that hasn't even been *made* in a decade is a rather dodgy plan. A good mid-tier PSU this old shouldn't be in a new system like this. It's not like this was originally a crazy high-end PSU with a 12-year warranty. Given the age that it's at, it seems likely you're suddenly, after 10 or 12 or 14 years, asking for far more power from this PSU than it's ever given before. The CPUs of 2012 or 2014 didn't have the boost behavior of modern CPUs unless you were aggressively overclocking.

PSU: Corsair CS650M
This review dating back to 2013 says the CS650M had a 3-year warranty.

Your PSU could be 10+ years old, but Corsair were not confident enough to give it a long warranty.

The RM650M has a 7-year warranty. The RM850 I found on the Corsair site has a 10-year warranty.

Corsair "ring the changes" every few years, making it difficult to keep track of a particular model. Designs change, warranties change, but an RM850 is a good mid range PSU.

Ditch the CS650M now before it expires. If you're unlucky and it goes bang, it could take out your mobo.
