So, I'm considering buying either a 980Ti Extreme Amp Edition from Zotac, or an AIB/Founder's edition GTX 1070 and I'm seeing that prices are basically the same (ebay vs new). I'm also seeing that the 1070 is faster at stock clocks... However, the 980 Ti is an OVERCLOCKING BEAST!!

There's simply not a whole lot of information out there right now that pits a fully overclocked 980Ti vs a fully overclocked GTX 1070. Anyway, I don't know what to do... I intend to use this in a single GPU configuration for games, on a single 1440p monitor...my cpu is a 4.8Ghz 6700k, 16Gb DDR4

Any suggestions? Which do you guys think will be faster/better for me? I play mainly FPS games, DOOM, BF4, Battlefront, etc. Thanks!!

Yeah, I think so too... :) In Fire strike Ultra i achieved graphic score 4961 and i could do better, but really did not care so much, so i stopped trying - actually i use the card on stock, no need for more for now.

That is why i advised to purchase non-reference 980ti.

Have a nice sleep - here is 10:24 AM... :)

Every 6700K is different of course, but I expect you should be able to get above 4.5GHz without any trouble at all.
Mine is stable at 4.8GHz (boost) and the temps are fine. Though at the moment, whether or not that is even necessary for majority of games is debatable.
For example, I set it to 4.8GHz, then forgot about it and went to bed. Assumed the next day that it was at stock speeds and left it like that for about 3 weeks. Didn't notice any improvement in games. It was only when I was checking something in CPU-ID that I spotted it was boosting to 4.8GHz! It's now back at stock and will probably stay there for a good while. Haven't tried going above 4.8GHz yet.

I juts replaced my 970 g1 gamer with the 1070, before I sold it I recored some tests, 2 months ago id have to lower 2-3 seetings in both gtav and witcher 3 to get 60fps. I was amazed that the fps has gone up, I no longer needed to move settings down so I certainly didn't see the NVidia nerf you mentioned, actually I saw a significant boost in fps overall.
