Some workstation applications are mission critical. Medical, architecture, aviation design. Data integrity becomes very important. Also memory/HDD capacity and bandwidth requirememnts can be extreme. CUDA Physics cards, 24 or more threads running. They're much more adaptable. Some technical programs are only certified to work with certain hardware. ECC RAM on a video card would be one situation. They trade speed / cost considerations for data integrity, reliability and accuracy.
