I am wondering what is the most entry level i7 haswell and is there any virtue to just picking one up over the highest end i5 for gaming, for simplicity or any other reason. I know all you here is that the i5 is for gaming and i7 makes no difference- but what if you do not want to spend money on another copy of windows, a motherboard, and ddr4 ram for the 8 fps gain Skylake may afford you.
What I am trying to do it overpower to compensate for lack of Skylake and get the best price to performance ratio.

I'm not sure I'd ever put "entry level" and "i7" in the same sentence. In any case, I'd rather have an unlocked i5 that I could overclock over a locked i7 for gaming.
You don't really have a lot of choice.

i7 4790K - has overclocking, 88w TDP, higher base clock
i7 4790 - standard model, 84w TDP
i7 4790S - low power 65w TDP
i7 4790T - ultra low power 45w TDP

The 4790's replaced the 4770's, which are now discontinued. The 4770's had all of the same models. They're all priced about the same too, because they don't compete with each other.
