Yeah but Pong was never about anything more than the gameplay. You had to have good hand/eye coordination and reflexes.

Seriously, I get the joke, but it also reminds me of how weak a lot of games have gotten in gameplay.

I really got back into Dark Souls recently, since I got Dark Souls 3 this past Christmas. So far it's been my best gauge of how far I've gotten play-wise and also a good gauge in how badly I can cheese in a game.

I still haven't played a Dark Souls game. I've always heard they really need to be played with a controller. I don't own a controller and even if I did most of the gaming I've done over the last 20+ years has been on a PC using a keyboard and mouse so there would be a learning curve.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is really good so far. My one real criticism of Origins was the very linear gameplay and Inquisition seems to have taken the best parts of the first two games and dropped them into an open world environment. I've only played a couple of hours and I'm still figuring the game out but I think I'm really going to enjoy it.

Played about an hour of the new Mankind Divided DLC : A Criminal Past. I'm trying to do it stealthily and it seems more difficult than the base game or the past DLC packs which is great. Cool story too.

Yeah, DS1 didn't port very well to PC, and personally I think a controller works the best since it gives you a better reaction time, and the game is all about rhythm/reaction. Comparing myself to other players I'm rubbish at it but I play it mainly for the story and the world building. It's just so fascinating what you can pick up in the game, especially if you took a few months off from it. Vaatividya on Youtube covers the series pretty extensively.

Inquisition is on my list of games to play, and I might pick that up while I wait for Breath of The Wild to go on sale, or get it for my birthday.

What's your opinion on Mankind Divided in general?

Inquisition was on sale for ~$6 for the game of the year edition last week through a British game retailer but I see it's over now. Origin almost never has good sales like Steam does so you have to look for 3rd party deals. If you've played and enjoyed the other Dragon Age games I think you'll like it.

I love Mankind Divided. It's probably the best looking game I've ever played and the world detail is nothing short of amazing. Pretty much the whole 50+ hours of my first playthrough was spent just looking around in awe and trying to explore every nook and cranny. The main criticisms I've seen are that it's maybe too easy and you're overpowered. I agree somewhat but it didn't take away from how much I enjoyed it. I've also seen criticisms of the story and I think those people didn't pay enough attention to the details. 😉

The DLCs are all stand alone stories and not additions to the main game. I'd probably like it better the other way but they've been good. I haven't been disappointed with any of them. The Human Revolution is one of my favorites of all time and Mankind Divided is a worthy Deus Ex game.

Oh I've got Inquisition on hand already (picked it up last year for my birthday couple years ago) but I didn't get a chance to touch it since I was away from home for the past two summers.

I'm definitely gonna give Mankind Divided a shot. I didn't really get into the original Dues Ex, but now I'm chalking that up to my taste in games at the time.

I never played the original Deus Ex ( 2000 ) either but I thought The Human Revolution gave Skyrim a run for its money as 2011's game of the year. Still worth playing IMO, especially the Director's Cut ( integrates the DLC into the story, otherwise it's an add on).

A full playthrough of The Human Revolution with the DLC / Director's Cut will take you around ~25 hours. The base Mankind Divided takes about twice that then the DLC packs are 3-4 hours each.

That's all very good to know! I'm going to check it out when I get the chance. In fact, the next time I have to put Dark Souls down (before I throw the controller out the window) I'll be sure to pick it up.

Xcom 2 is what i am currently playing now. IT has an awesome modding community which makes the replayability almost endless.

I am looking to get into rainbow six siege. I wonder if it is VR capable.

It has pretty good reviews on Steam and i love the concept of Swat breaking in to take down the bad guys.

You should definitely play Human Revolution if you haven't before playing Mankind Divided otherwise MD's story won't have much of an impact. The original Deus Ex (2000) 's story comes afterwards.
Human Revolution had one of the best trailers of all time. I still keep watching it lol.

It has a great soundtrack too. I listen to it and the Mass Effect 3 soundtrack all the time. Both are on my iPod.

I played Dark Souls with a mouse and keyboard. It's fine if you install DSFix. I never tried the game with a controller though. I didn't have one back then. The game however, is not really for me. There's minimal story involved and gameplay alone is not enough to keep me interested. Combat was very challenging though. This is why I never played DS2 or 3.

No, the story; "Our hero went here, talked to that guy, learned this, practiced that, overcame great hardships and slew the bad guy" isn't great.

But the Setting
The Lore
The World
Oh, they tell a quite a story

It's just not a story like Harry Potter who can be followed from closet to graduation.
More like visiting 5 different museums to see 43% of the work of a certain painter to conclude that he was beaten by his dad as a child, had an unhealthy obsession with his primary school teacher, did brave and horrible things in the war, had subsequent problems re-integrating into society and you understanding his subsequent suicide.

I mean, you saw some decent portraits, some very realistic fruit, GREAT use of shadows and some excellent landscapes, but the rest is entirely in your mind.

Or you could go online and read other people's interpretation of things.
Seriously, that's a lot easier.

Yup, when I used the word 'story' I totally meant the word 'lore' in my original statement. My bad.

I'm a huge fan of minimalist storytelling in video games. The medium relies so heavily on instructing the player, that sometimes developers forget that players can also interpret the intention of the game. To me that's what can makes video games as a form of art more so than a form of entertainment. Not to say that one is better than the other, especially because a lot of what we consider culture and art also has roots in entertainment. Blizzard is probably one of the better examples of sitting well on that fence, especially with the community that popped up so quickly after the release of Overwatch.

But Dark Souls, the series? Miyazaki obviously intended it to be a form of art using video games as a platform, and that's my interpretation of the series. He had a story to tell, and instead of showing where the player had to look, he let us interpret the story he wanted to tell, with the core points intact. Rebirth, futility, and the struggle of man.

/Puts art degree away because GAMES/

Oh, to me games became art a long, long time ago. I don't have an art degree or anything but if art exists to evoke emotion then not only have games transcended to that level they have become a primary audio visual medium that far surpasses what TV or movies are capable of. I do still like books better but that's another thread.

I'll stop now before my pretentiousness gets out of hand.

Oh I'm totally on the same page. Video games as ART and not as "art" was reached, I'd say, probably as early as the late 80's, when technology was being developed specifically to make games. But that's the personal marker I have in regards to art and the advancement of it.

My sister loves that game, I have yet to try it out though. Point and clicks are a pain on my fingers.

Playing currently Warhammer 40k: Space Wolf by HeroCraft. I liked this game on Android, the PC version version looks harder, but probably it's only my personal opinion. Now it's Early Access and I am really loving it and the game has great potential. Pretty good for turn-based strategy fans.

My favorite thing I explored was figuring out how the Royal line works and how The Nameless King fits into all of it. So many visual clues!!

I preordered Andromeda. Was there any question that I would? Hmmmm, pet pyjak...yep, take my money. 😛

Really enjoying Dragon Age: Inquisition. I don't know why I waited so long to pick it up considering how much I loved Origins. Dragon Age II just left me leery of spending full price on a Dragon Age game I suppose.
