I get an email from dell this afternoon that my computer was shipped
yesterday. so I click on the tracking # and it tells me it's not able to
find that #. how long does it take for the tracking # to work? thanks

The tracking number usually works about 48 hours after the computer is setup
and installed on your desk.

Dell ships to central UPS centers and it is only trackable after UPS has it
for a couple days -- usually after it is delivered.

Dell's status system is a joke.

Sometimes you can actually get the information prior to delivery but I have
had systems delivered while still showing in transit on the status site. I
have also read posts from others that have no status on their systems and
are already using the newly delivered system. It is a nice service albeit
not extremely accurate at the best of times.

All I know is that I've bout 7 or 8 Dells and NOT ONE was accurate in the
status system. Every single one arrived before it was even in UPS' system.
The latest one was up and running before Dell's status site said it was
built!

This is not tough technology. They should be able to get it right. For a
new computer buyer, it is important!

I'm not sure if Dell's status system is a joke -- although it certainly is
hilarious at times. I just think that the status system was never intended
to be exact because, who needs to know exactly? It's more of a guideline, in
the "Pirates of the Caribbean" sense of the word.

Dunno about you poor bastards over there, but here in the
"Asia/Pacific" area the system seems to work great! Mind you, I've no
idea how accurate most of the "detail" is, but it allegedly told me
when it was built, shipped, received by customs, and released by them;
and when it was shipped on its final step of the journey to me. It
then told me it would be received on [date] (a Friday) or after, and
it arrived on [date]. I was quite impressed. And I was nearly four
years ago too, when I bought my first Dell. Damn sight more
impressive system than any others I've seen. Most "scientific"
equipment, for example, usually turns up at random here in the sticks,
but not less than six months after ordering.

Cheers, Phred.

Once they get over the Canadian Rockies, you have to account for that burst
of speed coming from the higher elevations. Mine went from USA transit to
doorstep in about 24 hours. But the Canadian web site does seem to be a bit
more accurate then some things I have heard in the US.

Mine took 4 days to get from wherever in the US to Calgary, with no updates
available through the shipping company (Purolator). At that point, it was
out of Dell's tracking system, to be fair. Then it showed up in Calgary,
and the next business day it was in my office.

But again, anything that happens after the product has left the Dell loading
dock is really an issue with the shipping company, not Dell. Well, beyond
the fact that it was possibly a bad choice to contract with a low-tech
company.

BTW, I ordered my RAM the same day as the laptop showed up in Calgary (June
30). The Crucial order went from Idaho, down to Kentucky (I think), then
back up to South Dakota, and finally to Calgary and then to my town (Red
Deer). If that memory was getting frequent flyer miles, it sure got a deal!
And the memory showed up 3 hours before the laptop did! :)

I had to go to the Purolator office to pick mine up - they would only
hold it for approx 3 days and I had to work those 3 days. It was a hot
hot day and I had to struggle and sweat like crazy to get the 3 boxes
into my car on the far side of the parking lot. The monitor wouldn't fit
in my car (found that out with last 19 inch monitor I bought) and had to
fight to get it out of the box and on to the front seat. The bag in the
Purolator office said and I quote "why did you order something if you
don't have the means to get it home". I replied why can't you deliver it
after work or on Saturday when I am home. She just smirked at me.
