When connecting my display via HDMI , where does the sound come from ?

When connecting my display which has built-in speakers with the GPU via HDMI , where does the sound come from ?

Does it come from the built-in sound card on my motherboard , or does the GPU has a built-in sound card also producing sound ?

Technically it's digitally transferred through the HDMI and processed by the "sound card" of the monitor.
