When installing windows 10 i get a BSOD error driver overran stack buffer, i recently had a few problems with my pc with included application crashing so i reset my pc then it started getting BSOD which i read can be from resetting, so i reset to factory new settings and it crashed while reinstalling windows 10, windows has encountered problem and could not complete the installation.. in a loop so i got a bootable usb and used that and when i got to the customisation or quick installation it crashed to driver overran stack buffer BSOD now idek what to do here are my specs:
i5 6600k
Sapphire Nitro RX480 8GB
Corsair 8GB RAM
500W PSU
Asus Z170 Pro

Solution
I hope so, I don't like posts that go for months and don't seem to be getting anywhere, Enjoy your new PC since almost everything got replaced :)

the only thing is the GPU

so take it out and see if it changes anything... i would be surprised as you said it let you install gpu drivers, just nothing else.

it sounds to me like best idea is take PC to a shop and get them to figure it out. installing drivers should't create errors.

If shop can get it installed and working, also ask them to make a backup so you can use it if it ever needs to be reinstalled.

If shop asks for licence key for windows, tell them they don't need it. They should know that already but some places try to say they need you to buy win 10 just to install it when you can skip the key on install and the win 10 servers will fix it up.

I am sorry this has gone on so long but I can only do so much.

i did overclock my cpu on accident using something in my bios it was an asus feature could this have damaged the cpu??

It can, I don't know why the Intel diagnostic missed it.

Given what CPU does it explains all your problems - maybe Motherboard wasn't the problem and it was CPU, they are the two hardest things to test, I did say that before when i probably suggested getting someone to look at PC. Easiest way to test if something is the problem is replace it, hard to do for normal people as we don't have spare CPU, power supply or motherboards lying around

I would rma CPU and not tell them about overclocking, CPU is under warranty still. Considering once you replace it you will have a new PC, I don't want to jinx us so not saying a word.

Sorry you had to go to another web site to get the clue, I am going to have to work out how to read dump files.

Asus motherboards are bad for that, the optimised defaults can also run the CPU faster than stock. I overclocked mine using AI Suite for a few months when I 1st got PC, that was accidental as all I wanted it to do was run my fans and it got that wrong as well. I turned it off as PC doesn't need to be doing 4ghz while browsing web sites. I had added bonus of running a power scheme set by for my SSD and it had cpu at 100% all the time

Hey Colif so I go a new cpu and waiting on the gpu thanks for all your help however I've encountered a other problem on my old PC I don't know if I'm alowed to talk about it on this thread but I loaded it up and it said windows didn't load properly I tried sfm scannow and chkdsk but that's all I've done it just happend when I came back from school. Also when before I put the new parts in my new PC should I format the HDD and if so how?

its your question and I flinch every time i see you post as I really wish we had fixed this months back :)

after taking 3 months to fix this PC, you trust me with another? what happens at startup? does it get into windows or you stuck with that message at boot? Did you try startup repair? it should be in same menu as command prompt if you use the installer to boot off.

Hdd - shouldn't need a format before you put it in PC but I would once PC is rebuilt

IT turns on presents a HP logo and loading windows 10 circle thing black background and then after 20 second will say no display but the computer is still on, I switched it off and on twice and then said please wait and loaded to the recover thing and said Windows didn't start properly

lets see if we can get into safe mode

change boot order so USB 1st, hdd second
I assume you have a win 10 installer by now so boot from it
on 2nd screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose start up options (if this isn't here, see below)
hit the restart button
choose a safe mode (it doesn't matter which) by using number associated with it.
PC will restart and load safe mode

if you get this far you may not need to do anything, just restart and see if PC loads normally as sometimes just getting into safe mode can be enough

If startup options isn't there, as sometimes it isn't, choose startup repair in the same menu and run it
this will scan PC and maybe fix this - will ask for logon info

i dont understand, i turned it on today to try ur method and it just turned on and worked to the desktop.
still waiting for GPU
but how do you format cos ive seen many different things

Dude, no more flinching for you when you see this post, cos i believe its fixed ive put the new cpu in but still waiting for gpu as it got delayed like 3 times, but its working good so far. thanks you so much for your help its been a long hard road to fix this ting.... this is emotional :) well anyway thanks and hopefully it will be good from now on, i think it was the overclock thing i did or something else with the cpu but yea thanks :)

just wanna ask something, u know the amd or nvidia settings u can get to by right clicking and its the top option mine has disappeared, is there any other way to get to it?

Do you mean right click desktop?

do you have new GPU yet? If you just using the Intel gpu on motherboard, those 2 won't be there. As you don't have a card yet.

Otherwise, what card do you have now? Its possible you have the built in windows drivers and not the latest from Nvidia or AMD, did you install any?

The nvidia settings are in middle of the right click menu now, not sure about AMD

it was there yesterday but now its gone. its same for AMD yes

ive looked at some of these posts but i cant seem to find the cnext.exe file
would i need to reinstall? and how

well ive installed the amd drivers and it came back i think something went wrong when i tried to update drivers yesterday but it happend today at around 8 when it disappeared

hello again :)
well it seems after 1 year my computer has seemed to do the same thing after replacing everything
and i wanted to know if not putting thermal compound on regulars can cause BSOD ??

Start a new thread, since its a new PC now - you will get more people helping too. Share a link here so I can find it.
Remind me in it of the parts in PC

Set this up for next error:
Can you follow option one here
and then do this step below: Small memory dumps - Have Windows Create a Small Memory Dump (Minidump) on BSOD

that creates a file in c windows/minidump after the next BSOD
copy that file to documents
upload the copy from documents to a cloud server and share the link here and I will ask a friend to decode them for us.

You don't need to replace thermal compound on a regular basis, my PC almost 3 years old and I never replaced any yet.
