I have an OCZ Vertex 4 256gb. I wanted to know if its ok to update the firmware and then format the drive to NTFS during windows installation. Or will formatting the drive get rid of the firmware update, and if it does how do I format to NTFS and then update firmware before installing windows? Format and then cancel the windows install, update firmware, and then install windows? Thanks for all the help.

Solution
You don't need to manually format a SSD unless you're using it as a secondary drive; and in that case just Quick format it, not Full format.

In your case just let Windows format the drive automatically during the installation process.

And no, formatting a SSD will not get rid of a firmware update.

you can format anytime, the firmware will stay.

Update as soon as you can then use the drive. That's my advice. It helps to have a second computer. If not, you can install windows and then update the drive. You might loose the install but usually you don't.
