When will 8gb of RAM be too little?

So I'm building a desktop, and I'm wondering when will 8gb of RAM be too little for gaming? I currently have enough dough for 16gb RAM, but IDK what amount I should buy; can you help me?

I do not see any signal from the gaming industry to increase RAM usage.

Games don't use a lot RAM. you should buy 16GB of ram if you are running a server, programming, and or editting and making videos.

Battlefield 4 and a few other applications use 64 bit Executables, so 8 GB may be fully used in the near future.

With no games launched, I only use about 2.5 GB in Win 8.1
