When will the Q9450 be released and when can we actually buy it?

How much difference will a 6MB cache on the Q9300 compared to a 12MB cache on the Q9450. Will there be a noticable difference to the average user and power users ?

There probably won't be much difference to average users. Power users, be they enthusiasts or business, would probably notice the difference.

I'm looking forward to the release of these chips. I think a Q9450 would make for a good performer. I'm unsure of the X48 mobo. It looks technically good, but from what I've read it only uses DDR3 ram, which is fairly expensive at the moment. Will have to wait until its actually released to know for sure. Maybe a good X38 that's upgradeable and uses DDR2 ram will work out better. Again, don't know and won't know until they're out.

Lol.... You know waaaaaaaaaaaay too much about that kind of stuff

Q9450 release date? Feb-March? Maybe later now that AMD isn't doing anything exciting?

Personally I no longer care about the penryn quads, since the Q9300 and Q9450 are badly limited by low multipliers. Good luck getting that 4ghz with even the Q9450 everyone! You are gona need a b!tching mobo to pull a high stable FSB of over 470 =\ Of course they will be better then any Q6600, but stay realistic here people.

Motherboard should matter much aside from high OC potential... Don't spend more for a X48 unless it does something you need this year. Remember we will all need a new MOBO for Nahalem anyways, so forget about long term upgradability. DDR 2 should be fine, many X38's use DDR2, perhaps those would also be a good option?

If I could get a nice, stable 3.8 ghz out of a Q9450, I'd be happy. The Q9550 uses a half multiplier which can be troublesome and the higher chips get expensive fast. Unless I was to drop a grand into a top end chip, which I don't feel like doing at the moment, a Q9450 will do for me.

Nehalam is a fair distance off, and Intel may decide to delay its introduction. Besides, going the "wait for" route just means that a person can end up waiting forever for the next greatest thing. I don't know about anyone else, but I'll be needing a new computer soon. I actually gave my last gamer to my son and am using an office computer at the moment, which means I'm typing while other programs are busy doing important stuff in the background.

You mentioned that the half multiplier of 9.5 on the Q9550 can be troublesome. I have never overclocked a system, but was contemplating that possibility on my next system. Would you mind elaborating to assist an OC Neophyte?

This website says they will have 300 OEM Q9450 arriving on March 24th. I however, have an order with them for the retail Q9450, but it shows no arrive date yet. Hoping it is the 15th like the above poster said.

I was going to go with a E8400 but because they are sold out everywhere (newegg, buy.com, ClubIT), and also newegg raised the price to $250, I'm just considering waiting on the Q9450 but I already have the Abit IP35 Pro board.

What suggestions does everyone have???

Do those half multipliers ever work? I remember I tried them on my FX-60 and some really funky stuff happened. I think my ram ran at some weird speed and the thing wasn't very stable. Could have just been the MB though. I don't trust it anymore.

Not necessarily.
If Intel Ships the Processors on the 17th, then the distributors will not get them until AFTER the 17th. Then the Distributors need to send them to the Retailors.

The Result is that it will likely be close to a week after the 17th until they start showing up.

However, Supplies will be very very tight even through summer.
It's not until Q3 that Intel expects to be producing more 45nm than 65nm as they shift production.

Not true, they have been delayed thanks to intel committing the first batch almost entirely to OEM product for system builders which means that we wont be seeing boxed product until the second batch of the 24th. 🙁

If it doesn't show up soon, some catastrophe will come along and suck up my upgrade money.

I'm not willing to upgrade this year if the cash evaporates on me...

I've been getting more than a bit cynical over schedualed releases. All too often they have become anouncements of chips, rather than actual releases. I don't expect the Q9450 or 9550 to be available to the pulbic until April or May. Then we might see "planned" shortages for a couple months after that, keeping the price high both on them and on older chips.

The only thing that I which might change this is if AMD manages to get the B3 Phenom out at higher clock speeds than its first release. If Intel feels some threat of competition, then you can safely bet the farm that we will be flooded with the new Yorkies.

actually it has shipped, first batch get sent to companies like dell. And if you check dell's web site they now have systems avaible with the Q9450.
