Hello i have MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC, which has 2x M2 slot.

M2_1 slot is PCIe 3.0 x4

M2_2 is PCIe 2.0 x4

In M2_1 slot i have SSD SAMSUNG EVO 970 NVMe 250GB PCIe 3,0 4x with installed windows on it.

Today i bought SSD SAMSUNG EVO PLUS 990 NVMe 2TB PCIe 4,0 x4 / 5.0 x2.

Should i put new SSD 990 to M2_2 if i need it for fast loadings in games or should i put it to M2_1 instead of old slower SSD 250GB and create partition for windows and partition for games?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

First thing you should've done is ask first, then go buy. As it stands, if your motherboard won't let you take advantage of the 990 Evo as one of the slots max bandwidth is PCIe3.0x4 while the other is PCIe2.0x4. If you drop the 970 Evo Plus into M2_2, you're crippling your SSD than what it was optimally running at and in the process if you drop the 990 Evo, your SSD won't go to it's full speeds as M2_1 can only go as far as PCIe3.0x4 speeds.

I would've bought a new chipsetted motherboard in preparation for the 990 Evo or at the very least, looked into a B550 chipset to be able to run 2xPCIe4.0x4 SSD's.

Thank you for your answer. I know, my MB is poor and is not capable of full speeds with these SSD. I am planning to buy new MB in future. But i needed new storage and this SSD 990 was very cheap so there was not necesary to buy slower one. Right now i just need to know which of these two not optimal decisions is better until i buy new MB.
