Which budget processor is better?

So,my brother asked me which was better for gaming(will be used with graphics card):
1.Intel i3 3220 or
2.Intel i3 540 or
3.AMD FX 4300?
All are in a similar price bracket and the Intels have better multithread performance.Which will be better for playing games on?I think its the AMD due to more core,but I'm a noob .What is everyone's opinions?Thanks!

for games the i3 3220 is your best bet.

If you can get an fx-6300 or fx-8320 for within 20 to 30 more i would go that route

8320 can oc to better than 8350 stock. Its a great cpu
