Which card is better: ATI 9800 or Geforce 6200?

I mainly play Battlefield 2. My PC is a 2.53 Ghz (prior to Hyper threading) with 1 GB of RAM. I have a Geforce 6200 card with (I think) 128 MB RAM. I have just been given an ATI 9800 Pro, 128 RAM card, and I can't figure out which card is better. The THG pages don't seem to have any comparison info, so I'm starting to think they aren't even in the same class. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Im surprised a 6200 can play Bf2. My friend has one, and cant (Lol.) Defintely take that 9800pro. That'll be a boost in performance.

6200's can do anything with varying degrees of success, including Oblivion (but the eye candy is not so sweet).

The 6200 is newer generation than 9800 and can run NVIDIA's truevideo, but for games, the 9800 is more powerful.

the 9800pro will smoke the gf6200. it has 256bit interface while the 6200 has 64bit. the only thing that is better in the gf6200 is SM3.0
but take the 9800pro..... its equal to a gf6600

your friends one prolly a TC version, or with a crap system.

i have a 6200 and i only recommend it for older games i play bf2 and smoke and artillery is my worst nightmare without even knowing anything about ATI cards i still say swap to the other one.

My 64-bit GeForce 6200 (350/620) performs about the same as my Radeon 9600 (400/200). They're both slow but will play new games at lower settings. The 9800 PRO is loads better.

Thanks to all for the info! I popped the card in last night and played BF2. The first thing I noticed was the default video settings were all at Medium, when they were low by default with the 6200.

How do I tell if the card is a "crippled" 128 Bit 9800 Pro versus a 256 Bit 9800 Pro?

Thanks!

One quick way to tell is the 128-bit ones don't follow the 9800 pro reference design. If it looks like the bottom one in this pic below, it is a 256-bit one. If it looks like the 9500 pro above it, then it's a 128-bit version.

Hey PaulDH, that was perfect, thanks! My card looks like the bottom version, with the silver trapezoid heat sink and the power connector, so it looks like I lucked out and got the 256 bit!
Thanks!

Good for you. The real 256-bit ones are by far more common. But for a while, the crippled 128-bit ones seemed everywhere, so there are plenty of them out there; Something to consider if getting a second hand card.

agree..and i might add..slightly better than a 6600 even ..samething like 6600gt........

wow, that top one you showed looks like a reference 9700pro. (and 9500pro like you mentioned) I have a 9700proAIW, and have built many 9800pro rigs back in the day. Many had aftermarket sinks on them. Did not know there was a 128bit version. Good info man. Sucks that companies do that, trying to pull the wool over on unwary purchasers.

Regardless, the 9700/9800pro (256bit) cards are beasts. Definitely good find to upgrade from on that system man. w/ a bit of oc'ing you can get that thing going even better... but much better even @ stock than the 6200. rockin'

Yeah, the 128-bit ones were on 9700/9500 PCB's. The card specs out as basically a high clocked 9500 pro under the names 9800 pro (Sapphire) and 9800 PE (Powercolor). Shady to say the least; it tarnished the 9800 pro name...ATI should not have allowed it. A plain 9700 vanilla outperforms the 9800 pro 128-bit. Probably gone as new stock, they are only a threat second hand now. EBay had loads of them at one time.

Despite his cut and paste specs, I bet this one is 128-bit:

or this one: (9800se?)
