Which chipset??

Hi,
Ok ...so I aint that smart. i have read the 'how to choose a motherboard' article and while it did simplify matters somewhat I am still very confused regarding which chipset I need.
I am going to get a core2 duo e6700 so my sockets sorted. Now, I want a PCIe graphics card (probably an nvidia7600) I dont need SLI (i.e. i will never put two graphics cards in this machine) but I do want a minimum of three PCI slots for my soundcards (3xMaudio410) because I do music and love having 24 channels of audio going into my old analogue mixing desk. I also need sata drives and ddr2 (800) memory (4gb). It would also be very handy if it had firewire too - for capturing video from a dv cam. I do not feel the need to be able to perform overclocking either. (as if i would know where to start!)
Despite trawling the net for some months now I cannot find anything that fits the bill from the major manufacturers.
But if knew which chipset would fit the bill maybe I could narrow my search down.

Try to find the ASUS P5B DELUXE WIFI-AP. It has the i965 chipset, 3 PCI slots, Firewire and 4 Dimm sockets for 8 gigabyte of ram. It should cost you around your budget. If it doesn't fit your budget, check the non wifi model (P5B-E).

i965? i was aware only of G965 and P965.
can some one explain the difference between these 3? i'll be really thankful as i'm buying a mobo just like mbeswick.

The i stands for INTEL! A G965 includes graphics chip and is less oc'able than the P965 which does not have graphics. They both differ in design from the nforce 650 but have the same (more or less) capabilities supporting C2Ds. Also some mobos with the 965 chipset support ATI's Crossfire where nforce mobos support Nvidia's SLI.

The Gigabyte 965 DS3 is a very good mobo, stable and durable. A very good overclocker too. If you are going to buy a mobo now, i would suggest that you take a look at the newer Gigabyte P35 DS3. It should be available in a few days and it offers support for the Penryn 45nm chips, while tests show that it overclocks even better. Check out the following link:

I wouldn't suggest the OCZ for the 965 DS3. I think that you can find cheaper and more compatible memory from Geil, Crucial, or maybe from the likes of Patriot etc. What you should look for is memory that runs on 1.8V whether it is rated 667 or 800Mhz. Generally you should not pay more than $60-80 for 2 gigs of 800Mhz ram.

It all depends on your general setup, overclocking objectives and budget. If you give me more detailed info on these i will be able to help you more.

You might not need SLi but try looking at the MSI P6N SLI-FI. It''s not on MSI's UK website but you can find it, oh, here and there . Looks like it has everything you need, PCI-e, 3xPCI, firewire; and plus, it has an optical SPDIF output.

<edit> Forgot to mention, this is an nVidia 650i chipset.

its unlikely that i would need a P35 over 965. i'm not a over clocker, i'll settle for ddr2 rams, and i'll buy 65nm conroe now.

the thing is, i'm stuck with buying from canadacomputers.com and/or directcanada.com. the cheapest i could find was a pair of buffalo firesticks ($120 cad). there r 'value' rams, which i opt not to buy. if there r cheaper deals on these sites, plz let me know!

i read the OCZ was 'revision 2' and was running in 1.8V, still a prob?

If you are not going to overclock, you really don't need ram more than 667 Mhz. On the other hand, the only normal and cheap 2 GB memory i could find in canadacomputers.com is:
