I am looking to sell my console and build a PC. I have acquired some parts from a friend of mine and need a CPU and GPU. I have watched a video on bottlenecking recently and would like to know what approach I should take when buying a CPU. I would like to buy a Ryzen CPU but wondering which to go for. It seems the Ryzen 5 5600x is still a really could one to buy but I noticed the Ryzen 7 5800x is also at a good price.

The current parts I have are:

Corsair RMX1000
NZXT Kraken Z73 360mm cooler
Corsair Vengence pro RGB 4 x 8GB 3600mhz DDR4
Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite motherboard
1TB M.2

My friend has offered me his RTX3060ti for £250

Is it worth getting the Ryzen 7 5800x so that I can upgrade the GPU in future? Or save the money and stick with a Ryzen 5 5600x. Or is it potentially worth saving up to get a better CPU/GPU combo going into 2024? My monitor supports 1440p not 4K which I have no plan to upgrade right now (not sure how relevant that is)

Any help would be much appreciated

a few points

1 .
you can pick up a ryzen 7 5700x for same price as a ryzen 5600x

2.
power bill the rx 6800 isnt that bad power wise but not all rx 6800 are equal

rx 6800xt draws a fair amount of power.

also if you are not a tinkerer you may not get the results you desire from amds gpus.
this is from personal experience I found I had a lot of issues with graphical bugs or anti aliasing not working at all. hence why I say you may have to tinker.

nvidia 4000 series is quite a bit power efficient vs rx 6800 and 7000 series.

4070 is probly what I would suggest as its low power usage
better drivers. and overall better at animating textures and fur etc.

other things to consider is older titles nvidia has no issue supporting older titles.

but some games i found with amds rx 6700 didn't like older titles and newer e.g i got weird artefacts and blur textures on tales arise like anti aliasing wasnt working at all.
Hmm now this has stopped me in my tracks a little... The lower the power consumption the better in this current climate so maybe it would be worth considering the nvidia card with lower consumption. I was under the impression AMD have come a long way and that these days they have a lot less issues? is this untrue?

I'd expect about 15% more performance out of the XT so it'll depend on the price difference and how much you care about the power consumption (base power consumption is 20% higher on the XT).
Yes I now hear the power consumption is quite high compared to the 4070 so perhaps I need to spend money to save money. Apparently there is a 4070 super coming out in Jan 24 so potentially I can see if I can get my hands on one of them and be more patient (Just want to get it and build it already lol)

amds main weakness is software

between the rx 6800 depending on the model partner card msi etc it can be between 65 to 95 watts more.
even more power with rx 6800 xt.

where amd shines to me is value in there cpus then there gpu to me they need to invest more in it

rdna 2 fixes some issues with rdna one but rdna 3 7000 series is just plane broken. with power issues.

nvidia are no stranger to there 4000 series cards having issues with the new connector. my advice is still getting a 4070 with the 8 pin connector

you want one with this connector

I suspect this is going to be extremely hard to get though right? Could be months before i could get my hands on one, or has that all calmed down now?
if the 4070 super releases in jan 24 we should see price drops of 4070 if its retailing at 500 ( i doubt this as most 4070 are 550 i would suspect when january hits probly jan summer sale we will see the 4070 drop to around 475 pounds. however the 4070 super does launch at 500 pounds it could drop as far as 450

stock:
200W - RTX 4070
250W - 6800
300W - 6800 XT

Raster performance wise the 4070 is between the two, but closer to the XT than non (RT performance it will be above any AMD around the same prices) . Of course based on the pricing I'm seeing you could buy a 7800 XT (263W stock) for less than a 4070.

most stock models e.g sapphire pulse etc for a rx 6800 are around 280w
rx 6800xt isnt even worth it as most are over 500 pounds at that point youd be looking at the rx 7800xt

the cheapest rx 6800 is this one

vs 4070

You might have scalpers for new launch products. But retailers have learned from them and ask you to signup for verified buyers. limiting 1 per customer and asking for a confirmation code to place your orders.
Which vendors are likely to get stock? If I do wait for this I need to figure out to look to ensure the best chance of picking one up. Do variants of a card come out at the same time as the original or do they come out slightly later?

Thank you for the info! I was unaware they tried out a new connector for these cards so I really appreciate the heads up

The problem now is that I have heard from a few places now that generally AMD have a lot more driver and software bugs causing issues with games. Nvidia tend to be a lot better in this department right? But in the same light, I have heard that AMD have caught up and the price premium for Nvidia cards is not worth it. Finding it really hard to decide which is right

Are there any vendors to stay `away from when it comes to cards? I wouldn't usually lean towards brands I haven't heard of or I don't know much about. Also, a friend of mine has told me that I want to go for a card with 3 fans on it as opposed to one or two for better temps. Is this necessarily true I have only been looking at cards with 3 faces currently but maybe I could consider one with two.

AMD driver wise is fine and I haven't had any issues with my more recent experience. Both have issues because drivers are hard (ex: nvidia had a hot fix due to their most recent driver causing problems) but generally speaking they're both good. The only thing I've noticed AMD dropping the ball more often on is when they roll out a new feature it may not work as expected.

it depends on power draw for cards that are only pulling like 200w its fine for 2 fans

also depends on your case size.

3 fans will also be quieter as they wont have to work as hard

vendors that i dont recomend are
gigabyte there was a stint where they cheaped out on there pcbs which where causing cracking.
msi as ive had many issues with cards/motherboards.
Gainward is a cheaper version of palit.
powercolour are also a bit hit and miss there not nessary bad there not the greatest either
vendors recomended
zotac
asus
asrock
palit ( budget option)

Sapphire (amd only)

scan.co.uk tends to get stuff quicker
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ would be a week or so after.
ebuyer.com would be the 3 i would keep checking
amazon.co.uk is a bit all over the place they just seem intent to ship cards from usa but i dont think they honor returns if its a busted product from the us store so be warned.

it really depends if you want better image quality overall nvidia wins hands down.
if you want a higher framerate amd tends to fair a bit better.

from my experience owning both cards i have far more problems with amd then Nvidia that isn't to say nvidia is perfect. with Nvidia it tends to be more plug and play then with amd at least from my experience.

Again i would be more then happy to recommend amd cards more if amd woke up and got there heads out there ass to release cards with stable drivers instead of a mess out of the gate.

i will say that the 4000 series should be cheaper price wise they really made a arse out of the 4060 and below those cards are unsellable garbage due to there cost cutting crap.

hopefully intels new line of cards will be enough to wake both companys up. ( not recomending them due to there insane idle power consumption)

Scan and overclockers like said previously. I would be in the same boat as you - waiting for the 4070ti Super. Would be ordering from scan or Currys.

I do apologise for the delay in response!

But thank you for your continued help! See I have friends that swear Nvidia and some that say not to buy into the hype because AMD does just fine! So I guess I will flip a coin and just go for it

Ohhh interesting I was looking at gigabyte cards! But maybe I will look for an ASUS. I think I prefer the idea of three fans more if I am honest. I have just bought an NZXT H9 Flow so I am hoping this will help keep things cool

Thank you so much for the info I have made accounts for all 3 in anticipation! I have noticed this with Amazon. and it puts me off. Longer delivery times also when they do this

Thank you for your response!

I certainly have some decisions to make! Also, I had no idea Intel made GPUs!! I honestly think I may wait for the RTX 4070 Super at the beginning of next year. It's rumoured to be retailing at £500 apparently which I can save for. I suspect that would also bring the price of other cards down?

Right okay, I will keep an eye on both of these. I did use a site called stockinformer for my series X maybe I could use something like that to keep an eye on when it releases? Or is it best to just keep checking the site every day?

I owned a 3080 and it was a nice card but I’m happier with my rx 6800xt. As to image quality in personally in the opposite camp. While nvidia makes a fine gpu, in the past I’ve just felt like the colors on my amd gpus just popped a tad more. Though the nvidia cards still looked good.
ooooh okay, interesting so you are team red too! I need to do some thinking and just make a decision my head is so torn at the moment

yeah gigabyte and msi are the ones i steer clear of they have shoddy business practices.
asus are fine case should be more then long enough. also to take into account the longer the card the heavier its going to be so youll want a gpu holder to keep it from sagging.
