Which CPU I should get?

Hey Guys,
Im wonering what cpu I should buy to upgrade my current rig. I currently have a geforce gtx 970 and a fx 8350 running at stock speeds. I won't have the funds to do a full upgrade for a while so Im just looking ot upgrade the cpu in the meantime. (Yes I know I need a new Mobo and probably ram as well).

What motherboard do you have? If it's good for overclocking I would suggest getting a good CPU cooler such as the Cryorig H7 and overclocking that 8350 as far as it will safely go until you can afford a substantial upgrade as there's no FX upgrade I would think is worth it over your current CPU.

My motherboard is an Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0. I was looking at the Ryzen 5 1500 or 1500x to max out my graphics card till I get a new one, but If you think just getting a cooler and overclocking would be more bang for my $ i might do that. Oh also im running a 1440p 144hz monitor.

The Ryzen will require a new mobo and ram as well... different socket and all.
There really isn't anything better than your current cpu on that socket, so go with WildCard999's suggestion and OC it until you have more saved up.

Im well aware it would require a new motherboard and ram to actually get an upgrade but I was just wondering what the best cpu option would be for my current gpu and so I could potentially get an upgrade later as well.

For right now, it comes down to:
AMD - Ryzen 5 1600
Intel - PROBABLY(launches in a few days) the 8600(k)6 core/12 thread
I say probably, because full reviews and benches aren't out yet.

For that monitor I'd look at the Ryzen 5 1600, B350 motherboard & at least 8gb of RAM. Apparently there coming out with a GTX 1070 ti which performance is similar to the 1080 for cheaper but we won't know until it's released (Oct 26) and there's reviews to check out.

Coffeelake could be a suitable upgrade as well.

Thanks for the input. Ill keep my eyes on the Ryzen 5 1600. I was looking at 16gb of ram anyway but good to know where the floor is. might even just wait a bit longer and do a full overhaul of my rig.

The nice thing about AMD now is that there going to use the same socket (AM4) until 2020 so at least it will be awhile before you'll need to replace the motherboard. Also if you do buy Ryzen then make sure the RAM run at least 2666mhz+ as the CPU's run better with faster memory.

Noted I'm just doing preliminary shopping so nothing is set in stone yet.
