Which is the best CPU?

Athlon X2 BE-2xxx (Brisbane) (AM2)
Athlon 64 X2 up to 6000+ with Dual Core (Brisbane) technology (AM2)
Athlon 64 X2 up to 6000+ with Dual Core (Winsor) technology (AM2)
AMD Phenom Triple-Core (Toliman) up to 8xxx series (AM2+)
AMD Phenom Quad-Core (Agena) up to 9950, (AM2+)

Mine currently is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e Brisbane, 65nm, AM2 940. Dual core 2.6GHz. I am thinking the Phenoms are better because I get the extra cores. I can get a used one for $30 Canadian. Then throw in 8GB of RAM (now has 4GB) and see how she purrs. I'd buy RAM first, install and see how she purrs. Then buy the CPU.

Depends, what are you using your PC for?

10+ pages of internet, online games, used to play world of tanks but no more. Even now with 20 pages open she is lagging. Even typing is lagging. Just got 5 pages of Toms open, HP website at spec sheet, BikesDirect website, and other non flash websites. I rarely use flash, except for some games. But no games on now.

I think I need extra cores and threads. For $15 Phenom x3 8550 with free shipping and $20 for 16GB ram should be good.

To be honest at this stage I'd recommend an upgrade to an i3 6100 and a H110M motherboard for $150, the AM2+ socket is dying, and struggles with most modern tasks. 🙁
If you are intent on buying an AM2+ CPU, I guess you might as well make an informed decision.
The Phenom Quad Core Agena CPU is the best out of the ones you have selected due to its high core count and therefore a higher load tolerance for your use.

Please list you MB. Compatibility may be an issue.

If you want to go for DDR3 memory, a migration towards an Socket AM3 motherboard is mandatory. Once you do have a Socket AM3 motherboard, you'll get support for up-to DDR-1333 MHz memory or maybe more.

On socket AM2+ you'll be able to make use of DDR2-1066 MHz memory, while on socket AM2 you'll be limited to 800 MHz.

You can use a socket AM3 processor on a Socket AM2+ motherboard.
You cannot use a Socket AM2 processor on a Socket AM3 motherboard.
It will however require a Bios update.

I have the AMD Phenom II X4 965 in one of my systems and it is a great Quad core CPU.
I do not recommend second hand processors.

From http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01625611
Motherboard is MS-7548 (Aspen) Chipset: AMD 780G
Processor is AMD Athlon X2 5050e 2.6GHz with 2 cores Bus speed: 2000MT/s
Got the list of CPU's from that as well.
Vista 64 bit.

The system works fine for the rest of the family. They use very light minimal internet, desktop Windows Mail icon, MS Word, Powerpoint, recieving and viewing PDF. Me, its like I said. I got 4 windows open now, each with 6 tabs open to the internet. I use Mozilla Firefox which warns me if I want to accept or deny Flash. Gifs work, like your signature. I use CCleaner and Malwarebytes, used to use MSE. But yeah Vista is coming to its end of life, if not there already. But if I get a new motherboard, means new O/S $150, plus new MS Office suite $150. Cheapest I find is $55 to $70 for mobo, plus $50 for CPU plus $30 for RAM. Canadian Dollars. Might be able to shave a little off. $120 for all new trio + o/s and office. Mid range, I'd go LGA1151. $80-$90 MB, $85 for G4400 Intel, $45 for 8GB DDR4 ram. All in $220, plus O/S and Office. So total $520.

If I can wait it out a year I would like to. I can put up with this system another year, been putting up with it this long.
Just like a little extra cheap help is all yeah know.

The readings I have been doing tell me my current CPU aint that bad, I guess that means for average users. But the readings also explain more cores the better. Not sure if I get more threads or not. Maybe I am confused with Hyperthreading the new intel i3/i5's. Those are ideal, thats why G4400 is cheap and can up it later to i3 or i5. But I'd like to wait a year for prices to come down. Especially CPU prices.

New CPU to fit current system min is $75. Used x3 $15-$20.
