Which is the better one?

It is a matter of opinion whether PC or console is better for gaming. Both have their strength and weaknesses. The most important thing in gaming is who is the better player (but don't get too competitive and being rude) and have fun.

Define better?

If you mean that the graphics power and the visual quality is better, then your friend is right. PC games *can* look a lot better than PS games depending on the quality of the PC. For this reason, a lot of people argue that PC games are "better". Playstation hardware is simplistic and cheap compared to a good quality rig, so yep - a PS game will have significantly lower quality visuals compared to any decent gaming PC.

PC also has mods, which allow you to download hundreds of new bits for a lot of games, such as new levels, new areas, new zones, new spells/weapons, updated visual quality, edited zone design, etc. Because mods are being made almost every day, it can be hard to run out of mods to download for PC games, so effectively whereas PS games "end", PC games can last a lot lot longer.

PC games can also sound better if you get a good soundsystem set up to your PC. However PS can also have good sound if you have extra speakers set up to your TV.

However, consoles have a larger userbase, meaning that there are generally more multiplayer matches going. It's not that noticeable, but it's something to consider.

I think the one way in which I'd say that some people find PS better than PC is the controls. With the PC you have to learn to use a keyboard and mouse, which isn't that difficult, but is a bit more complicated than using the good old PS Controller. A lot of people have problems with PC gaming because of the controls. But then again a lot of people don't, and many even prefer the PC controls, so it's hard to say.

Overall, I'd argue that PC gaming is more complicated, but more versatile. I would agree with your friend.

I was originally a console gamer myself and eventually moved to PC simply becuase it had some better games, plus you could play online (back in the day when online console gaming was non-existant). However, I find myself leaning more towards console gaming again, given how much more capable they are now. It seems like there's more fun to be had on consoles becuase it seems more interactive, plus you don't have to worry about stuff like hardware requirements, cd-keys/DRM, installing/uninstalling, etc.

It also seems like there are better games making there way to consoles. Even games that are cross platform or ports seem better developed for the console than the PC

In terms of interactivity and ease of use, I think consoles are a better pick.

However, in terms of sheer power and overall potential, PCs definately have an edge.

PC is better than PS. This is because it is just cheaper. I don't like paying for a computer and a PS. Plus, almost every single game gets a PC version, and almost all controllers work on PC.

I just recently sold my xbox and got into the world of PC gaming and I find PC players to be a whole lot more fun to play with. On the xbox and PS you can get paired up with dicks and kids who have no idea what they're doing, this can still happen on the PC but I don't tend to see it as much. Also nothing can beat a good RPG and you'll find that the PC has a better selection of these.

keyboard and mouse
more graphics processing power capable before buying a next generation console
game mods (extra maps from game developer + user created maps = longer game life / new run speed (time to kill) = almost new game / same engine)
some computer parts have a LIFETIME warranty
internet for console = internet for computer (but computer internet is 30% better)

as you see above..
the difference between console and pc gaming can be VERY small, underappreciated, or completely non-existant at times.

certainly not worth the cost we have to pay for graphics cards.
looks like i will be seeking a tax return for having simply seen other people's chance to waste their money (as i am quite surely they do).
i know i have been without the cash, or lack of rationale, quite a few times when the games got better and the graphics cards needed more processing power.

it is obvious..
the games last longer on the consoles because the hardware is available 4 years before the same product comes out for the computer.

think about it.
at the beginning.. the games play perfect.
at the end - six years later - the games look better, get the same frames per second, and havent required a new graphics card or CPU or more RAM.

a person wanting to play the video games on the computer has to upgrade the graphics card at the bare minimum of two times.. and i really feel the need to say THREE times, because some of the newest games simply cannot run on the older hardware without some more graphics power (and an upgrade to a quad core processor).
we are about 20 - 30 frames per second behind.
and i am sure they would be loving to tell me i could go out and get another gtx400 series card for $150

but.. lets be honest.
i have already spent the cost of a playstation 3 and cannot keep up with the games they can play.

whoever thinks they can use the pride and ability of the internet or some magical software to put forth the validity of cost towards the build of the computer.. think again, as i can confirm those thoughts are false/weak.

main cause you ask?
many chance blown.

PC games are almost always going to be on the bleeding edge of hardware advances, while consoles are relegated to the tech they had when launched. At the same time games are more and more being developed with the console as the target platform, due to the prospect of greater market penetration, thus won't take full advantage of said tech. Crysis 2 is a recent example. When it came out the PC version had nearly identical graphics as the consoles. Recently they have released DX11 and texture patches that will beat the hell out of a strong computer, and would simply not be possible to run on a current gen console. So if your only basis is on graphical capability, then yes the PC is better.

Some games are better suited to a gamepad though, IMO racing games are far better with a 360 controller than the keyboard/mouse. If you do a lot of online gaming XBL makes connecting to and keeping in touch with friends easier than most PC games, though I really have not messed around with the community on Steam, so I am just grabbing at straws there.

There are also some games that really don't work well on a console, like RTS games. I have recently been very into Civilization 5, and that would be nothing more than an exercise in frustration to even attempt to play on a console. So really the arguement of which platform is "better" really boils down to what kinds of games you are into and how you prefer to play. That said there is absolutely nothing wrong with partaking in all platforms if your budget can sustain it, more=better right?

as a person looking to get into the video game creation industry..
ya'll make me awfully nervous with your comparison here.

there isnt such a strong point that is keeping PC gaming practical at ALL.
the price is stupid high.. you buy a game and if you dont like it.. you are stuck with it.
you can program more buttons, and that is a seriously big plus compared to console gamepads.
but
consoles can use a keyboard and mouse too (with an adaptor i believe).

i fear the PC gaming market is already dead, and the stubborn ones who keep spending all that money havent realized it yet.
i know people are always willing to crack open a PC game on the computer.
and the government should be stepping in to catch criminals who try their hand at cheating.
this could really keep the PC gaming market alive and healthy.

obviously i would have to program a game for all platforms available if i want the widest audience.
and it would be far too reckless and easy for me to buy a console and play my video games on the console.. and program my own video games, send them to the PC gaming community and not really pay them any special attention.
because that is simply making your video game available to that platform to get more fans and more sales.

doing it that way appears to be heavily backwards.
consoles do nothing much but one thing.
so if you do it right, you really shouldnt have any reason to look back at the product except to check in on 'after-release results'

PC games shouldnt be a bear or burden themselves either.
do it right the first time (with enough security) and you dont have to worry much, because you could focus your release on driver standards instead of specific hardware.
api standards instead of specific operating systems.

one game with a bump in texture resolution is not going to budge my fear.
having downloadable and user created maps remains an interest.
but i have already suffered from watching game after game being released.. and none of them ever EVER make my mouth wet or my energy excited.

kinda like going garage sale shopping.. and visiting 20 different garage sales, without a single thing that makes you think about bringing it home.
sure..
something that was cute to see ONCE.
but that isnt shopping, that is window browsing.
