Hiya,

I am in dire need of a new laptop, but I dont know much about computer specifications so I hope you can help.

I am looking for:
- A lighter-weight laptop (I am a student, soon-to-enter-the-workforce).
- Preferably a studier metal/aluminium chassis.
- I want my laptop to be functional as long as possible and be able to run several tabs with lagging (so I appreciate comments/suggestions about which CPU system you think will still be functional in five-ish years which is the age of my current ASUS-laptop).
- Somewhat okay battery life (at least a workday).
- A screen that is nice to read on.
- My budget is around 6500DKK/£750/$1000/€870 - if specs are worth it.

I have three contenders so far:
- A refurbished (business) Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 14'' with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4600U CPU @ 2.10GHz; 8GB DDR3 ram; 240 GB SSD and a (not-so-great, I guess) 1600 x 900 pixel screen. Price: $1000. (https://www.refurb.dk/p/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-carbon/73101).
- Lenovo IdeaPad 720s 14'' with an Intel Core i5-8250u CPU @ 1,60 GHz; 8GB DDR4 (can be upgraded to 16); 256SSD and a 1920x1080 pixel screen. Price: also $1000. (https://www.elgiganten.dk/product/pc-tablets/barbar-computer/LE81BD002PMX/lenovo-ideapad-720s-14-barbar-computer-champagne-gold)
- A refurbished (business) HP EliteBook 850 G1 15.6'' with an Intel Core i5-4200u CPU @ 1.90GHz; 8 GB DDR3 (upgradable to 16); 128 GB SSD (also upgradable for an additional cost) with a 1920x1080 Pixel screen. Price: $550 (https://www.refurb.dk/p/hp-elitebook-850-g1/65923).

Do you think refurbished computers are a solid option (despite the older processor) or should I go with the newer Lenovo Ideapad 720s for with a Gen 8 CPU for my new computer to last as long as possible?

Any other suggestions are also very much appreciated! I have tried to speak "computer language" but I dont know how well I succeeded, so bear with me ;)

THANK YOU!

Ps. I also just found this on offer for around a $1000 as well; also a Lenovo IdeaPad 720s but with an I7-8550U CPU, 8GB ram and 256 gb SSD: https://www.dustinhome.dk/product/5011043148/ideapad-720s

There is no way to know how long a laptop will last, only some general ideas based on the brand reputation. The X1 Carbon is a very good system, however it's a premium model, and the IdeaPad has better specs for the price.

Refurbished is probably no good for you unless you are prepared to have it fail soon and maybe do a bit of work on the system such as cleaning it out and applying new thermal paste to the heatsinks.
