Which Of These CPUs Is The Fastest?

I contacted Shuttle Support to ask what the fastest avialable processor was for my XPC system. Instead of just telling me they sent me a list. As I am a novice builder I really am unsure which of these would be the ideal choice. I will be doing no overclocking, but I would like to know which of these represents the fasted option for the CPU. I included the list below. I assume it's one of the Barton class, but again, I am new to this.

I realize it's an older chip, but I currently have a 2800+ and it's a question of maximizing my old computers potential. I can't really go with a whole new system at this point, so I want to get the most out of the one I've got. It's a gaming system so I'm trying to squeeze a little more life out of it before the next-gen games come out. I can just about get Oblivion to run as is, but it could be smoother. Half-Life 2 goes like a top.
 
Either the 3200+ Barton, or maybe the 2800+ Sempron. The Sempron if I'm remembering correctly was supposed to have optimizations derived from the Barton core. However the 3200+ Barton might still be faster.

Although if you want to upgrade to a newer AMD based XPC, you can get a socket AM2 barebones for $190 (that's before S/H) at Newegg.
 
There is not a lot of difference between a 2800+ and a 3200+. So you may want to look at upgrading your video card. You can get an x1950xt for AGP. It will be bottle necked but, you will see much more improvements in games.
 
I'm not familiar with Shuttle,but the 3200 200fsb is the top.Unless it would handle an xp-m2600 with good memory it would easily oc to a 2.4(with a good stepping...aqyha).But as you stated your not into oc'in,gl 😀.p.s.Not a really good bang for your buck though,I'd stick with the proc and upgrade Video card and 2-2-2-5 memory(maybe you have already) if it's a cl2 motherboard.
 
It would be nice to know the rest of the specs of the machine. However, overall, as boomboom said, it won't be a big difference. Also, it's pointless to upgrade it anyway considering it's hard to find Socket A CPU's. Better off saving the money towards a new rig.
 
Well, I was able to find one Barton on Pricewatch, and it's $280. Ouch.

If I were to dump my current guts into a barebones I would want to be able to use current RAM. Otherwise I want to upgrade the video card, looking at an nVidia 7800 Gt or something along those lines. With my current system the issue with a video card upgrade is space - I don't have much. I would need to upgrade my power supply as well. So the barebones is looking like a better option at this point. I have no brand loyalty, bang for the buck is what I'm interested in. Being able to add a PCI type video card would be ideal.

If I were to spend say, $300 on a new barebones, what would you recommend? Again, my primary use for this system is PC games. I would be putting my 2G of RAM, a sound card, a new video card in it. Again, I really appreciate all the assistance. I am in the weeds about this sort of stuff. Feel free to toss in any useful thoughts on getting this up and running for about $300.

I think the Duron 600 will be the fastest out of the listed CPU's. :x :x

Seriously, i can't believe you included 600MHz/700/800/1GHz machines in that list. :?

+a dirt cheap (~$35) Socket 754 motherboard to reuse everything else will be cheaper and perform better :wink: And since the CPU is a venice core, will give you overclocking headroom to at least 2.6GHz and that's not bad for ~$90 of an upgrade while I doubt you would find an Athlon 3200+ for this price and stil performance wouldn't even come near to that of theS754, 2.2GHz A64 3200+.

Doing some checking this is what I could come up with on AM2

Case with PS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811154048 26.99. I have heard that the Allied PS that these use are somewhat reliable.

Which leaves about enough for a 7300GT for a video card.

So it may be possible.
 
That 6600GT is a good deal, especially if you can wait for the MIR.

Though I don't think that the 6600GT is twice as powerful as the 7300GT, it is clocked a bit faster, but that is it. The 7300GT has 8 piplines and the 128bit Memory interface, unlike the LE or GS which have 4 pipelines and a 32 or 64 bit memory interface, yuck.

One advantage to the 7300 is that it uses much less power that the 6600.

But it does look like he could get a decent AM2 system for about $300. We'll have to see if he wants to or not.

EDIT: It looks like you have to be careful with the 7300GT as some of them have a 64bit memory interface, stay away from those.
 
Yeah the X2 3600 is better, faster speed, dual core, and all that fun stuff, but using it primarily for games I was unsure if spending the $20 on that or a better video card would be better.
 
Ohh, I thought the 7300gt had only 4 pipelines, making the 6600gt only slightly faster, I thought it had twice the pipelines too, oh well, it's still clocked far higher, but the 7300gt does use less power

For $300, yes this does look like a fairly decent build

But I would dump that cpu for the 3600

C'mon, you're turning it into a totally new, $300 build while he only wanted an upgrade and for a sub $100 upgrade keeping AGP and DDR(1) the Socket 754 is perfect.
 
Well, the Barton 3200+ is the fastest CPU on that list, but at this point, I'm not even sure it's worth upgrading to that, it's quite obsolete.
Not only that, but it's also very expensive. I sold one on ebay a couple weeks ago for more than $150.
 
Yeah, that's a good one, but it's 754, not 462, he wanted to max out on his motherboard, otherwise a cheap am2 cpu would have been the better choice, the am2 cpus oc far better (though if I recall he doesn't want to oc)

I think AM2 is out of the question as it will require DDR2.

If you pick a sufficiently fast 939 proc, there's no need. Just about any of the X2 processors available in 939 should do.

Taco, you have a point if the OP is willing to make an investment. the 2GB of RAM alone is half his budget... Plus a proc, plus a mobo, and the 9700pro isn't going to work. The budget has to rise a c-note or two.

By going 939 and reusing everything, you can stay around $300.
 
Wow, I really appreciate the feedback, this is really very helpful. I have never run across a more helpful and educated forum. It's sort of amazing.

Overclocking - Probably not going to. If I could get meaningful results with stock parts and minimal risk I'd take a swipe at it, but 3% to 5% improvements aren't going to lure me into a whole new computer dicipline. It's become very complex since I last built a system in 2001 8O .

Current RAM - Literally just bought it. I would ideally like to keep using it, but I am flexible about all of this. Again, at the end of the day for me it's about getting a high end game like Oblivion to run well, so if there is a reasonable way to get 2 gig of RAM in a new system I would. As it stands now, it would be a shame to dump it so soon.

Future Upgrades - I would of course like to have a path to the new stuff that appears on the scene. I am willing to spend a little more to get that. But as a former twice a year buyer of new video cards I have a much longer run with my gear. I would probably not upgrade a video card unless it was a generational level improvement, for instance.

Once again, a great thread for anyone who is on the cusp of a new system on a budget. Thanks to all who have offered advice, it is appreciated.
 
Thee aren't any x2s available for 939 though, you have to go opty now, unless if newegg magically got some more in stock. But the op said he's willing to spend up to $450, so I think am2 is an option

Newegg isn't the only company that sells parts. although they have the 3800+ in 939 (OEM though) for $96. They're around if you look hard enough.

If the OP lived near a Fry's Electronics (my 2nd home) I'd tell them that they often run a X2 3800+ 65W and an ECS mobo (w/ PCI-E) for $90. Add $100 (AR) for 2GB of DDR-667. and use ebay or craigslist to obtain a reasonable new video card- I've seen 7950GT's on CL for $160 here in SF. 7600GTs on ebay are in the $110 range. What are 1950GTs going for?
 
You could always sell that Athlon XP machine and use the money to buy a new AM2 system. Socket A/754/ are dead, buying ANYTHING Socket 939 is now a waste of money. AMD is really only making AM2 chips. I think you are better off saving the money and build a new system.
