i'm a college student, so i'll be doing the generic college stuff( word processing, programming, etc) and i'll be gaming, d/l'ing divx and mp3's.

my comp is the following
1.4 tb
ecs k7s5a mobo
512 ddr 2100 from crucial
deskstar 60gxp 40gb
geforce3

i was just going to get XP or possibly just use the copy of win2k that i have.

I guess i just want a recommendation on what OS to use. thanks

I've been running XP for a couple weeks now and not crashed once. The computer did struggle once (seemed like it would crash), but all it did was refresh the screen and I was good to go.

If you already have 2k, I'd say stick with that just because XP is going to cost money  . Unless you like the theme-ability of XP, there's not a whole lot of reasons to go with XP over 2k. There are a few and you may want to research them to be sure, but you'd probably be plenty happy with 2k, especially if you're going to be the only person using the computer.

I'm using an XP beta myself right now. It's great and all, but the activation has me scared, among other things and I just don't think it's worth it over 2k. I do all the same things you're going to be doing and I'd be plenty happy with 2k. In fact, right now, I'm considering buying 2k, but not XP. Plus, as with all things Windows, expect a large number of bugs to get reported in the first few months of the release, so it might be worth going with 2k just to avoid the chance of having to pull your hair out in frustration with XP.

Anyway, some things to consider.

Ben Porter.

If you have Windows 2000, I say stick with it for now. Wait a couple months and see if WinXP needs some bugs to be worked out. Then, if you like what you hear, then go for it.

Kernel32.dll error...aw, son of a.... 😱

dude ive used everything and when i say everything i mean everything and xp rocks. Its faster than any other os out there right now.

When I go into a computer store I lose all means of reason for some reason.

Lets see... word processing, program coding, games, mp3 whoring... I think the better question would be which OS couldn't do all of that? Hell, Win95 meets those requirements. Your machine is pretty fast, I'd probably stay with 2k myself unless I had a pressing reason to switch to XP.
