Question Which PSU + Motherboard + CPU + RAM Should I Get

Hi everybody,

So the story goes that back in 2013, I built my gaming PC, with an Intel 3570K processor, Asus p8z77-v pro, MSI GTX 660 Ti, and 16 GB DDR 3 RAM (G-Skill Ripjaws).

Since then, I upgraded my GPU to a GTX 1070 Ti (and overclocked my CPU), but everything else stayed pretty much the same, and that's what I'm rocking today.

My system actually still works perfectly fine, and I'm also gaming way less nowadays than I used to, so I don't HAVE to upgrade, but I do like having the option to play games and occasionally do so.

Since I'm about to move to the US soon, and since I do occasionally experience that CPU bottleneck when playing heavier games, I'm considering upgrading my CPU and motherboard (and also RAM if necessary). I also must change my PSU (we are using different outlets where I live).

I'm not really up to date on hardware anymore, so I was wondering if I could get your advice on possible options.

As for the PSU - I don't need anything fancy, just something reliable that will get the job done (I wouldn't like to pay more than I have to). Right now, I have a 350W bronze one (I forget the model).

As for CPU+motherboard - On the one hand, I wouldn't like to spend too much (no more than 300-400 USD, and possibly less), but on the other hand, if upgrading, I want to get something that's actually good and that will allow me to upgrade my GPU in the future without changing everything again (so something more than just the bare minimum necessary).

RAM - just what's necessary

Thanks a lot!

Thanks Dark Lord of Tech!

My specs:

- Case: Fractal Define R4
- CPU: Intel 3570k (+ Noctua heatsink)
- GPU: MSI GTX 1070 Ti
- Motherboard: Asus p8z77-v pro
- RAM: G-Skill ripjaws DDR 3 8GBx2
- PSU: 350W bronze (can't remember which)
- HDD: 1 TB SSD (can't remember which)
- Four case fans (3x 120mm, 1x 140mm, have space for one more)

for CPU+motherboard - On the one hand, I wouldn't like to spend too much (no more than 300-400 USD, and possibly less), but on the other hand, if upgrading, I want to get something that's actually good and that will allow me to upgrade my GPU in the future without changing everything again (so something more than just the bare minimum necessary).

Hi, your budget and request for something that isn’t junk makes things harder. I saw you are going to the US but think USD for GBP.

Something along those lines may be a starting point for others to chime in.

1. The memory is rated at 5600 MTs, 6000 CL 30 is better.
2. The motherboard isn’t the best, it’s also not the worst. Others are available. Check the reviews and look at x870 motherboards for AMD too. The base features are identical. For more money x870e and x670e (basically identical features) are available. They are priced from £250 to over £1000.
3. The Ryzen 7600/7600x is the base for the last gen AMD CPUs. They are 6 core 12 thread CPUs. Ryzen 9600/9600x is the current generation. Performance is similar but the 9600/9600x uses less power.

You would be well advised to replace your PSU, specify what you need against the GPU that you are considering. GPUs are thirsty!
What I found is an inexpensive starting point. Good luck!

I’d say a mainboard, ram, cpu, cooler and a decent reliable psu for $400 and faster than your current systeem (which is still pretty decent) is a bit of a stretch.

Maybe wait a bit to save for a bigger budget or check the second hand market.

Thanks everyone, just to clarify, I meant 300-400 USD just for the motherboard+CPU.
RAM and PSU are separate, I will just get what’s necessary in these components.
