6700k and a gtx 1080. Or 6800k and a 1070 (second later)? I want it to last awhile and the x99 platform has more cores (dx12 etc). And more pcie lanes and more slots. The 1070 seems like it could do the job then theres an option for a second one. I want it to last awhile. And be (((future proof))).

Solution
Well, the 1080 would be able to output that type of framerate, but at the point of 144Hz, a 6700k is getting stressed, nevermind at 165. Personally at that point I would get the 6800k and the 1070 and possibly look towards SLI later in life.
Right now^. I am talking 4 or 5 years down the line is what I want my cpu to still be performing. And its a 165hz 1440p panel. Not really too interested in getting over 120 fps. I can do that later. Just good fps at 1440p with a platform to upgrade my gpu(s). And a 1080 is a little more expensive and I probably wont sli it.

even with dual 1070's you may start to struggle in 4 or 5 years, it would be like using dual 670/570's
