Hi, which will offer the better gaming experience,,
Upgrading my current 1080 gaming rig with an i7 8700k and new mobo and ram OR
Swapping out for a gtx 1080ti but only a Ryzen 2600x cpu

I game at 1440p overwatch is my only high refresh rate game
The rest are AAA games

Currently have a gtx 1080 and an i7 2600k , so it's time for me to upgrade the cpu either way, if I go the 1080ti way it's probably going to cost me about £100 more

For purely just gaming, a 1008ti and a 2600X should be faster than upgrading your CPU.

Just buy the 1080ti (if you wish) and see how that performs on your current system.
Then you can decide to upgrade the cpu to 2600x if it doesn't boost it enough.
I wouldn't buy both at the same time when you may find just doing the GPU is enough.

Are you playing on WQHD or 4K ?
If not, no need for a 1080ti and just upgrade your CPU only.

Edit: alright 1440p is no problem for the 1080.
Upgrading your CPU should be enough, no need for an upgrade from the 1080 to the 1080Ti.

Around here, an RTX2080 is cheaper than a 1080ti new, and with similar builds you'd be looking at @$500+ difference between 2600x and 2080 vrs just changing Intel platforms. So unless you can get a good deal on a lightly used 1080ti, and sell your old 1080, then the Intel build with old gpu is going to be far cheaper overall.

Wow this is a really hard question. One the one side, the 1080ti is much faster, especially a custom cooler 1080ti. On the other side you game at 1440p.
Intel gives you more fps at lower resolutions. The question is how many fps do you want. Since the Intel would give you (for example) 180 fps rather than 150. But at the same time, your overall fps at all resolutions, will be less, with the 1080.

And the GPU is easier to replace, in the future, while a CPU can last 7-10 years.

This has to be the hardest question I've ever heard honestly.

Ok assuming you don't have a 200Hz 1440p monitor, the 1080ti + 2600x is the best combo overall. The issue is, and this is why I said it's complicated, Intel gets more fps in games at below 4K resolutions, BUT it requires a GPU that can get those fps in the first place.
Considering you want Overwatch and probably 144 fps, the 2600x is sufficient. I'd recommend you try to get a 2700x if you get the extra money, so you don't need to upgrade for many years (and be more future proof), but that's up to you. Then again if you have the extra money I'd recommend a 8700k. Again, the 1080ti + 2600x is perfectly fine for now, for your specific case (unless you want those 180 fps).

Once you get over 1080p performance Intel loses its lead of 8% to 4% and then less again at 4k
