Who else sands/laps?

Just wondering who else out there sands/laps the bottom of their heatsink. I did it to my FOP38 with some 320 grit emery paper, then some 600, and finally some 1500 to shine it up really nicely. It took about 3 degrees off of my previous temps.

What does sanding the heatsink do that brings down temperature? I am running dual P3-933's with FOP 32-I's.

you get better contact between the heatsink and processor.... all HSF's have shape iregularitites on the bottom..... by lapping / sanding, you get get a nice smooth, flat bottom... shinier is better... better contact = better heat transfer

Yep, basically better contact with fewer, smaller air gaps. (Air is a very good insulator).

Doesn't Arctic Silver prevent those gaps, or will the temp drop another 2-3 degrees on top of the arctic silver?

Arctic Silver FILLS the gaps....

Ideally, one would have a perfectly smooth cpu die, and a perfectly smooth heatsink surface, and you wouldn't need any arctic silver. Thermal grease just pushes most of the air out of the gaps, but still doesn't do as good a job of conducting as a good heatsink/die mating.

Yeah, lapping the heatsink makes a difference, depending on how far/fine you go. I'm not sure if using metal-metal really makes a difference over 1000+ grit, but you can set it up with a jigsaw and a little weight running over the weekend. I'm not sure if the guy that did it isn't on prozac as well. I can't tell any kind of difference that lapping my core did. It takes off the nifty 'AMD' logo, but it seems like that's about it.

lapping your core is where i drew the line

i lapped my HS before i ever put it on so i dont know how much it wouldve reduced the temps. according to ppl who have lapped their cores, they get about a 2C difference in temps which isnt to shabby. i just dont have the balls

The core isn't as fragile as you might believe. Although, you might want to put a small amount of silicone on the capacitors/bridges around it before you sand.
