who the hell buys this????

That is exactly what I was thinking. If I had 300 bucks to blow on a quad sli motherboard that supports intel, that would be a nice choice. Gigabyte is a good company, I have had several of thier products and they have worked very well.

umm.... i think u got it wrong. u cannot combine ALL the cards. u can only pair up 2 of them (and another 2 seperately).

what i want to say is that there aren't exactly thousands of ppl who can afford 2 cards (high end that is), and now 4??? not to mention the lack of expandibility.
this mobo would have done good if it was limited edition or sth. maximium ppl would rather go with the G1 turbo mobo.

you forgot about the other advantage of having 4 PCI Express slots and that's the ability to drive 8 monitors. and you might say, who in their right mind uses 8monitors?
Tell that to the stock brokers and day traders or system administrators.
to them the $300 or $3000 is nothing (especially if they get their company to pay )

AutoCAD designers, Graphic Artists, Computer Programmers, etc. who like to use a lot of monitors to make their job easier.

Not to mention the filthy rich who want bragging rights.

Well Im sure someone out there has enough money to play games or watch movies or surf the net with 8 monitors. At first I though it like like a quad sli that works together just like the one Dell is showing off. I saw the video in Nvidia's website. But this board is 2 sli in one board. Still I won't buy this stuff for gaming unless they could come up with working all 4 cards together to get x32aa. That would be one gaming experience. 😀

wait what if u got 4 of those dual 7800GT's... man that would pwn

Probably wouldn't work that great really. Dimishing returns would catch up with you quickly.

since the cards only talk 2 at a time, they all have to cross-communicate over their 8X lanes, and even when there's just 2 they say you need 16x, having all 8 cards sharing that limited bandwidth sounds like a recipe for congestion. I'd be surprised if it perfomed much better than running 2 of them on a dual 16X mobo.

And just because something works, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I see the practicallity of this board limited, but probably not bad for more business related apps. I'd love to see 4 GF6600GTs quad SLi'ed running Maya, 3DSMax, etc. Based on Crash's tests it could offer some interesting results.

As for 8 monitors, heck you technically could run 16 of the PEG slots alone (let alone the PCI + PCIe-1X), to bad XP'ed have trouble controlling them since it has trouble after 10.

straight out, r there really many ppl out there who buys this?

dumbest mobo i ever seen!
well, dual cards are not the greatest thing, so what's the point of having a quad card setup?

Graphic Designers need 4 to 8 monitor capability.
Stock brokers need 4 to 8 monitor capability.
Web Designers need 4 to 8 monitor capability.

I would say this board would be better used in the commercial world more than games (even though Gigabyte is marketing this board to gamers). Yes there is a market for this board. Besides the SATA at 3Gb/s with RAID 5 is a great feature by it self. It's a nice little board packed with features

It could be good if those "Physx" cards ever catch on.

Another good point. I'd love to have one of those boards especially if the games started supporting them. Since it'd take care of all the physics, the main CPU could focus almost solely on AI.

"Dual card setups don't give big enough performance boosts (over a single card) to start talking about quad card setups"

The thing with two cards in SLI is that the MIN frame rate is so much better. I use two 20 pipeline 7800GT's to hold down the silly cost of 24 pipe 7800 models and spend the savings on 2GB of RAM so load times are much lower. Why does that matter? I suck at these games and keep dying and have to reload all the time. Laggy min frame rates seem to help the AI kill me better than I can kill it, too. I use standard PC3200 Corsair value RAM locked to 208MHz when I overclock the 3800+ X2 to 2.225GHz. This gives you 4200+ performance, two SLI cards and memory that is 1/3 to 1/2 as expensive compared to what most people buy with and with single card! I just don't see the min frame rate performance advantage going the route of fast memory and a fast CPU with one video card.

This wasn't a terribly expensive PC box (no monitor, Mouse or keyboard) if you watch what you buy. A sensible CPU and RAM leaves the extra dough for two SLI cards instead of a less effective purchase of super fast CPU's and way faster memory than what really helps. There are even sub $100.00 motherboards that run SLI very well (ASRock has a $85.00 model that rate well) and could let you still buy XMS style memory for an OK overall BOX price.

Also, you get a PC that works well right off the bat verses, for example, a XT800XL that barely runs current games, only to upgrade to a single GPU later on that barely runs the next engine game and to NEVER get to run ANY current games extremely well today. You can wait a year or more till the new games are old and the hardware to run them is finally cheap. Not a bad option, either. Me, I like to watch old movies when the are two bucks and play semi-current games. Pick your poison.

So, two video card are NOT necessarilly too expensive or headonistic, and if done right, down right practical, too.

Well I guess its ok but it seems like more of a gimmick than anything else. Sorta like video card companies dumping 512MB of RAM on a low-end chipset like the 6600 series.

Yeah but the thing is you NEED a 60" plasma if you want true 1280x720, no one NEEDS SLi.

Of course I NEED a 71" LG Plasma, because nothing less than 1080P will do! 8)

NEED is such a strong word but want really doesn't describe it either....

I agree with you, Dual graphics cards might not look special now but they will be in a year or two when games really start to be PC stressers and use shader models heavily.

Still the introduction of Quad cards isn't really necessary right now, maybe after six months would be better.
