jimmy, read up on fusion before destroying its possibilites.
I know you like your ATI card, as do I, and was being sarcastic, and AMD buying them didnt ruin them, as the 5xxx series is AMDs decision, not ATIs, tho it is using mainly the R600 arch.
Have a lil faith man, heheh
Im thinking we will all be presently surprised by fusion, since it appears to have around your old cards perf, which is great for low end/entry level.
Dont confuse what Im saying by the early models which may appear, which is nothing more than what Intel is doing, speaking of which, if the early ATI IGPs are SoC, look at Intels models, and their ocing abilities. The clocks are way higher than before.
1 more year, and things will change for good, and for the good
I'm not destroying its possibilities. I am just stating that there is in now way that Fusion will replace the low end GPU market unless AMD is stupid enough to only put their low end GPUs in Fusion and leave their mid-extreme end as discrete. You know for a fact that nVidia would dominate them by cutting the costs for a better low end discrete that the only people who would buy a Fusion would be businesses who will probably still go for a Intel IGP/CPU solution since it will probably be cheaper than AMDs Fusion anyways.
I do love my 4870. Hell I loved my 2900 even though a 8800 constantly beat it until the drivers got better. But even so it still sucked watching ATI go from a great competative company to a screw up. 5 gens worth of great GPUs to just fail all of the sudden after AMD bought them. Makes me wonder. But still both the 2900 and 4870 were $150. Better than nV could do.
My point is that Fusion will probably throw around AMDs current IGP performance. Great. not really anything to gawk at since even the low end HD5K series outperforms my 2900 by a lot. It wont replace the low end. It will replace the IGP from the chipset and then next thing we know AMD and Intel will have a SoC for laptops and low end machines further reducing costs and possibly opening a low end gaming market. But I doubt it will get more people into hardcore gaming.
BTW, you can't use the 1 in 8 for gaming. That probably includes the people who play the games like Bejeweled that can run on even an age old IGP from either side.

imho and repeated experience with jim smit, he indulges in placation, offering the small change to AMD, and the big bucks to spintel. That's the best of it; the worst of it is worse; but spin it is. general discreditation.
It is difficult to be here at times.
Right now I give a lot of credit to Intel. They have one hell of a CPU in their hands. AMD deserves a lot of cred too for K8. What I hate though are the ones who consitently try to twist every little thing.
Basically those who state EVERY benchmark that shows Intel in the lead is either rigged, paid for or false. Then when they get one for AMD claim AMD is the better one. Its sad. Its like that all the time. Even when AMD is better. Hell low end AMD beats Intel easily and probably will for a while. But high end right now is owned by intel, something some people can't stand for some reason.
Same people think them buying AMD makes them a better person because AMD is not corrupt. Yet they forget to look at all the companies they buy other products from and how corrupt those companies are.
sighQ2 :
spintel simply announces the spin that comes with any information about spintel, and any information offered by spintel. You want me to respect criminal activity? spintel is in legal caca as a fulltime job. The law offers them respect.
It's like a hunter has great respect for prey; it is essential.
spintel probably makes people uncomfortable if they support spintel. I don't think that people's guilt is really my problem. I don't have that problem since I don't support spintel and neither do I hunt spintel. I simply wish it would go away; which it might; if we are truly respected by those in power. But man, the abuse is so blatantly obvious. And so announced. So well known to so many millions already. And prosecuted already on a global scale. That's uhhh - like pretty huge. So it must take a lot of spin to keep those wheels turning. Yes, things are going to change. There's no other way to spin it.
Or we could real dysfunctional about it - ya know? Like, How are you? O, I am fine. Just fine. Meanwhile the dogs are at the door.
Did I miss something? 4 antitrust cases doesn't matter? what? how many before it's just not ok anymore?
O that's just normal - well, I forgot what normal was. just ask bad trip. lmao.
What is wrong with this picture? You don't believe this is happening?
Why all the AMD hate, guys?
really
.
As I said up top. Look at every company you buy products from. Wal Mart, Coke, Pepsi. There is no way you can justify not ever buying or respecting Intel if you take the whole anti-trust matter seriously because you will see that almost every company you buy from is just as bad. McDonalds has a exclusive deal with Coke. KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell are owned by epsi. Thats why you NEVER see anything but those products in the stores.
And as for the "global" anti-trust, I still can't take the EU one seriously. After what they did to Microsoft, and they plan to go after Windows Media Player next BTW, their whole investigation into Intel is a scam. Not to mention they had the worst country leading the prosecution: Germany. Where is AMDs main FAB? Germany. Talk about messed up. Thats like allowing the murder victims spouse or parent be the judge.
The US is another one. NY AG starts it because he wants to run for office and probably because AMD plans a FAB in NY. Factor all that in and you can see that even the anti-trust cases themsleves are filled with wrong reasons and corruption.
The NYAG did it for good intentions my ass. Same with the EU. Fill our pockets please and make me a powerful political figure.

I read this whole thread and my opinion still stands.
Latest most bleeding edge AMD product will be 40-75% the cost of the latest most bleeding edge Intel product, and still provide at least 80% the perofrmance. I'm going to stick with bragging rights about more money in my wallet than a few extra points on a benchmark. Unless you're making more money using your equipment than you are spending on it you should invest for what suits your needs.
I can almost most certainly guarantee that the big hollywood FX producers are using something far more proprietary than the processors us consumers argue about. This doesn't mean that Intel isn't better, but I do firmly believe that AMD is the better value.
Actually they tend to use the same thing we consumers get but they tend to go with the non high end server chips and the FireGL/Quadro GPUs. You can buy one but they run very high in price.

Guys seriously you shouldn't be arguing so much. I mean if you think there is no way AMD can catch up, think again. Can you honestly deny that ever since Phenom II they have improved by a great deal, and that Dirk Meyer (new CEO) is actually a pretty competent guy? I mean seriously, with 45nm AMD was behind Intel by a year (more or less) and now with 32nm they will only be about 4 months behind. Also look at the new lineup AMD has for 2010 and 2011. Quad core laptop chips (finally) in H1 2010, Thuban in H1 2010, ultrathin notebook cpus in H1 2010, and in 2011 they have Bulldozer, BD based 12 core opterons, APU's, 6XXX GPUs (look at the roadmap for proof), and 28nm netbook chips.
Phenom II improved a lot. Problem is that it only improved to what Phenom should have been: full competition for C2Q 65/45nm. Its good vs Nehalem but only really in gaming. Anything else its not able to keep up. And since gaming itself is not the core of CPUs sales it doesn't help to play second string.
Don't forget Intels roadmap. They have a lot coming up too. In fact some ahead of schedule. Hell I can't wait to see them get Atom to the small enough size to be in cell phones. Currently a DROID only runs with a 600MHz processor. 1.4GHz in a cell would be nice along with GMA (well Core i3 GMA) graphics. Mobile fun center.

spintelligence - The deliberate manipulation of intelligence reports to suit one's desired goals. Includes deliberate manipulation, exaggeration, or omission.
Basically its Intel's business practice to the tee, hence Spintel.
This thread has gone way beyone the topic, should be locked. Its just an insult war right now.
Actually Spintel only came about during the K8 days where Intel fanboys would consitently spin anything to their means to look good. Kinda like what AMDZoners do or the AMD fanboys do. I think they only two things during K8 that Intel had that was worth while was the Pentium D 805 OCed (equivalent to say a Phenom II X3 720BE unlocked) and the Pentium M which is where Core and Core 2 came from.
muratgemici2003 :
I don't hate AMD. I just never have owned one. AMD users seem to like the chips alot. Intel makes a lot of money grubbing decisions about their chips like the 920 I7 vs the 940. Paying $200 more for a couple of MHZ is lame! At least they could add some extra cache or QPI to make it worth while.
AMD does this too. Every company does it when they are on top. Its just business. You rule the high end, charge more. Make more money for the same CPU. Thats how they roll.
Of course the Core i7 EE chips do have a 6.4GHz QPI vs a 4.8GHz but it wont help in anything but memory intensive apps.
