....and how to make MDAC verifiable/recognizeable?

I am installing a MapInfo application that, as part of the installation
process, needs to apply the "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP3 Updates to MDAC
2.7 SP1" patch (screenshot: http://home.comcast.net/~adelphis21/01.jpg).
However, the intallation fails bacause the patch does not recognize the MDAC
version installed (screenshot: http://home.comcast.net/~adelphis21/01err.jpg).

The contents of the dahotfixMDAC.log basically tell this same story
(screenshot: http://home.comcast.net/~adelphis21/02.jpg).

I have done everything I could. I've been reading up on MDAC and possible
problems for the past 3 hours, installed all the versions down to 2.6 and all
the patches I could find on microsoft.com, repaired v 2.81, deleted and
restored registry keys, and so on. Component Checker shows recognizes all the
versions I have installed up to the latest 2.81 (screenshot:
http://home.comcast.net/~adelphis21/03.jpg). This includes MDAC 2.7 SP1 that
the said patch tries to update (screenshot:
http://home.comcast.net/~adelphis21/04.jpg).

My question is, how do I make the required MDAC version verifiable so I can
apply the patch and continue with the installation of the product? Thank you
in advance!

MapInfo is not Windows XP
MapInfo is not a Microsoft product
