Why cant my computer read my external hard drive when it appears in my computer

why cant my computer read my external hard drive when the icon appears in "my computer" it was working fine before this happen.. it keeps telling me to reformat.. I cant open the nor can i sync to my laptop..

The drive might have become corrupted. Have you tried it on another PC?
