Why does AMD have so many versions of the 2.4 GHZ CPU?

Why does AMD have so many different versions of the 2.4 MHZ CPU's. They have the 3400, 3700, 3800, 4000, and of course the X2 4600 and 4800. I have the 3400, but I'm building a new computer and I'm probably going to get the X2 4800. I sthere a significant difference between all these to justify so many, for instance is the 4000 that much better than my 3400 other than socket 939. If i was to go from the 3400 to the 4000, would i even notice a difference? I just happened to notice all the different versions of the 2.4 MHz processor and thought I'd ask the question. :?:

those are the differences...So they have so many because they have different cache levels and some are dual core some are single core.

For the most part I understand the differences, but is on really better than the others, excluding the dual core since we know the advantages there. For example if I went from my socket 754 3400 to the socket 939 4000, would I really be upgrading.

If they are the same speed same cahche....you would be upgrading because it would be a newer technology....but not by much. maybe 1-2%

It should be noted as well that there are @ least 7 different 3ghz p4's.

since the somputer is not just about the cpu, upgrading to a newer socket is not just about cpu perfoprmance (at least now), but the overall peroformance of the computer, upgrade to a new techology like PCIE will benefit you (no that AGP is bad, just since ATI and Nvidia are kinda ditching AGP and not a lot of new AGP stuff are coming....), not to mention native sata support (NF4), better memory controller of the cpu (memory performance) newer HTT, and a lot of other tings that comes with socket 939, but IMO don't upgrade now, you seems to have a fine system, wait until socket M2 (940) and upgrade when M2 is mature (so that all the bugs are hammered out and all) or hell wait and see what intel will offer with its 65 nano chips............................ (wait and see how they perform, intel's road map is impressive, but with all that dropped chips in the roadmap i would not give many of them too much a though except to see what **might** be offered by intel as a competition)

Yes Intel has a lot of selection between 2.8-3.4ghz. I'd be suprised if there were less than 25 proc's....All P4's..... between 2.8 and 3.4

Yes, I do have a good system now, but most of it is old technology. I have an athlon 3400+, 2 512 of OCZ DDR 3200, Seagate 120 paralell ata 100, and a BFG 6800 GT. I've really been wanting a larger SATA hardrive and the advantages of socket 939. Also, with all the graphically demanding games out now I want a 7800GTX, which I need PCI-E for.On top of that I want 2 GB of ram. Thay's why I have the CPU dilemma, do I spend a little less and get the 4000+, go dual core, or say screw it and get the FX-55.

With that rig I would wait for M2 socket before I upgraded. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to drop that dough for a relatively minimal performance increase. OC that CPU and vid card for better performance. What mobo do you have?

BTW a skt 754 will be clocked 200Mhz higher than a similarly rated s939. That 3400+ will perform as well as a s939 3500+ Venice. M2 is right around the corner and dropping that much money on DDR when AMD will transition to DDR2 with M2 just doesn't make sense. JMHO

What board do you have? I can exchange my 939 PCI-e board with 3000+ Winchester for your 3400+ and current board. There is no such thing as old tech as long as it does the job. This board is a k8nf-9, gigabyte with nforce4. I've been able to run it a 260 FSB, but the SATA controller don't like that ... and since I have 4 drives in, I cannot use the locked port 3 and 4...

That 2.4 GHz should do great with video editing.. I dont even want the 6800 ...

I've been struggling with the same questions you bring up. I've got the MSI K8N NEO Platinum NFORCE 3 motherboard. I got the upgrade bug because my video card is already on the low end of playable for games like F.E.A.R and the only way to upgrade is PCI-E. Also, I wouldn't get anything less than 4000+, more than likely a dual core, or at the most an FX-55.

I agree with Rugger Here. Here what I started doing upgradding other things like New Mouse keyboard set and windows 64 Pro.

When Intel and Amd get a new chip out I will wait a few Months when they release more of the same chip I will buy that.

I only ran windows 64 bata and Loved it. That why I ordered the keyboard and mouse so My whole system would run 64 bit drivers. The Logitech fx 500 did not have 64 bit drivers. So when I seen Logitech had another mouse close to what I m running I went for both Windows 64 and keyboard mouse combo. What I will do with my old Mouse is use it for my laptop for I know fx uses alot of battery power and I would have 2 Mice for the laptop one always charging and one always being used.

I will keep windows xp on the computer so if there problems I still have a backup.

You also have different steppings on the same speed processor. The 3500 comes in an e3 and an e6 stepping. Newegg has these two on their site with a $4 difference.

AMD charges them same for em and calls em the same thing so its the retailers who make that distinction.
