Why does computer think my computer is scanning it

We're having issues with internet signal drops at my house. Signal dramatically weakens or disappears and then comes back, often within minutes, just fine. Sometimes the drop lasts for a long time. Roadrunner has it narrowed down to drops in the signal going to my modem.

But in getting to that point I got a new router - D Link 655. We are all hooked up to it by CAT 5 cables along with my phone modem and my Roku. When my housemate's computer momentarily loses it's internet signal, he gets a message saying that my computer is scanning his computer.

I don't believe I have any software for the D Link 655 installed. When I tried running the setup CD I lost the internet and had to get DLink support to help me configure the thing manually.

I don't have my router secured at the moment because we had to reset it last night. This router definitely has its issues. So conceivably someone is getting in from outside.

What would cause that message?

I don't get the part about the message saying your computer is scanning his. Never heard of anything like that before. Next time it happens, have him take a screen shot or something and maybe we could figure out more, but with just a he said this, I have no idea.

Yup, I did tell him that. But the problem seems to have stopped. I bet for good. I secured my router, that I didn't secure after I reset it two days ago. I had 10 connections to my router, and now I have only the four I'm supposed to have. I bet someone messed with our network.
