Why does my 4k tv do 4k@60Hz but 1440P@ only 30 Hz ?

Hey guys, so I am currently using an LG UB8000 40" 4k tv as my gaming monitor on my pc... and im having a weird problem.

When I set the resolution to 4K, I can set the Hz to 60, same with when I set it to 1080P... but for some reason when I set it to 1440P the only options given are 30Hz and 24... Does anyone know why this is and if its possible to fix?

I have been thinking on selling this or at least putting it to a different use, and buying the Asus ROG swift 1440P Gysnc monitor.. but I am very used to gaming on much larger screens and am not sure if Ill be able to get used to a 27 inch screen but besides that all the features of that monitor seem awesome. Ive never gamed at 144Hz so I don't really know what Im missing but gaming at 1440p 144hz in the newest games is pretty tempting.. I just had high hopes for a great 4k monitor and Im yet to find one.

It might be because it uses an older version of the HDMI port. The HDMI port in your Tv is probably limited to receiving that much info.

that makes absolutely no sense. It uses HDMI 2.0 how can it be "limited to receiving that much info" if I can do full 4k resolution at 60Hz. 1440P is half of 4k.

HDMI 1.4 port was limited to 30FPS at 4K when connected to a PC.

I support the idea of using a monitor over a TV.

If you are using Nvidia graphics you can easily try out a custom resolution and 'force' 60hz.

Pretty old guide but the idea is still the same. Hopefully this helps a little.

You basically need 2xGTX 980, or a Titan or R9 295X2. Something that can get your gaming performance up to the resolution of the TV. Its not easy to tweak it so it sits around the right frame rate. You are probably better off getting a 2560x1440 adaptive sync gaming monitor and display port cables.

Why did you even bother posting this thread ? Never ever run a non native resolution any LCD panel. This is common knowledge. Back in the day of the CRT we could run any resolution but LCDs just get all messed up when you try and run a non native rez as you have found out.

since you've been so terribly helpful, thought Id give you the solution.

Im well aware its best to keep it on its native resolution.. but that's not the question I asked.. I just wanted to know if anyone knows why 4k and 1080p do 60Hz and 1440p doesn't. 4k is the native resolution but that doesn't stop the tv from outputting 1080p at 60Hz.

Anyway don't worry about it. you got your little point or whatever for answering.

yup.. youre still not getting it lol. and for refrence I do have 2 gtx 980s.. but it wouldn't matter what I have because its the actual TV that is outputting 30Hz.. not the graphics cards...

Typically you can push the refresh rate higher at a lower resolutions.

Hey man thanks for the advice. I actually just went and attempted that. as soon as I set the resolution to 1440P with the NVidia control panel, it only allows me to set upto 30Hz.. but when I go back to 4k or 1080p 60 Hz is back again.

ohh I found it. damn :/ the tv just went black. Must just not support it at all for some reason. Really strange. Im back using 4k@60Hz now.

Do you have any recommendations as to what my best bet for a monitor is? Like I have stated, I run 2 gtx 980s Oc'd.. I haven't been able to find a lot of monitors to compare to the one I mentioned in the original post.

Shame about the resolution not working, but you can always mess around and see if you can get balance somewhere.

As for the monitor, you have the graphics horse power, and that Asus monitor looks really nice. I personally got a BenQ XL2420Z and I love the 120hz speeds. That Asus monitor just looks amazing in every way.

TV's typically have a large (slow) response time and very poor pixel density.

HDMI bandwidth limitation. Newer HDMI 2.0 have a higher bandwidth and allows 4k at 60 Hz. If you're in Europe, try the method above but set it to 50 Hz.

The issue seems to be, when at 1440p the screen was not capable of 60hz. But at 4K the screen is capable of the full 60hz.

4K at 60hz is more pixels per second than the screen running in the lower 1440p at 30hz, in theory it should be easier to run at 1440p, even if the screen was running 60hz, that's still less pixels per second than the full 4K at 60hz.


Kinda confusing, I know.

And unfortunately I'm still not aware of a solution. Perhaps update the screens firmware? (if even possible)

Does anyone know why that is? I'm guessing it's because they are designed for 1080 source and not a typical monitors 1440 signal. If bandwidth is not a limitation, then I hope someone will be able to teach us what's wrong. TV's are basically computers at this point, they just had to make them so complicated.

Edit: Maybe because it can't upscale 1440 to 4k, because 4k TV's upscale 1080 signals. Just a random guess. I would love to hear from a TV expert!

This is my educated guess here, but since most responses have to do with bandwidth (ruled out by 4K 60, plus HDMI 1.4 can do way above 60Hz at 1440 and anything older than 1.3 would be too weak to produce 1440 @ 60) I figured these people are all idiots and decided I'd give my two cents.
The only thing I can come up with anything other than 4K has to be reprocessed by the TV to figure out how to reproduce the 2 or 4m pixels image on its 8M pixel screen. 1080P is small (comparatively) so it can be done easily, but 1440 is twice 1080P... Seems like that would be less work on the TV but the TV has to receive the picture then decode and process it for upscaling and there just might not be enough time. Since 4K comes in at 4k, it wouldn't need to be upscaled so part of the process for the others is skipped, freeing up the processor to give higher FPS.
Wish I had more than a theory but I've been researching since last night and can't find the answer.

I have the same probleem on my 4k 55' phillips tv. ive updated the firmware via usb but i still cant run 1440p on 60hz.
The only solution for Some games,like bf4 is changing the resolution scale to 50%. But not all games have this option sadly.
Otherwise im very happy with using a big tv for gaming and it looks gorgeous and powerfull on 4k. Also,my tv has a 6ms delay and i seriously can not tell the difference between my previous gaming monitor and this tv. I think it mostly bothers some people only if they Know about the delay time,like a placebo effect.
6ms is not a long time at all... and neither is 8ms probably

The only trick is to put your resolution at 1080p then from there create the customs resolutions. So the ones that fit the screen the screen best are the 1080p and 1440p @77hz. Unfortunately you can't oc the screen on 4k. Also even when your at 1440p, the TVs info will still say it is at 1080p you guys are welcome

My god man,you are a friggin Genius!
I just set the resolution to 1080p and then made a custom 1440p one in the nvidia controll panel,i set the refresh rate to 60 and it stuck!
Playtested assassins creed unity and the 1440p resolution option is now available at 60hz. I set the aa to TXAA and it looks gorgeous and i gained 15-20 fps and saving 300-400 mb of Vram! And btw,i have a completely different phillips 55 inch 4k tv.
