IT's about 5 months old, fairly new, it is a Seagate Barricuda 1TB 7200 RPM hard drive. It is a gurgling/precolating sound. Is it failing? It hasn't had a problem for about 4 months since the sound started.

Is it failing? How serious is it?

About a month after I built my PC I started hearing it.

Hardware usually fails within the first 6 months, so that could be it. But a hard drive is supposed to make noise, scratching when it reads/writes etc, it's got moving parts--it's no SSD. If everything is incredibly slow (OS/programs in general), then that is a sign of it failing. Best to test it with a software, rather than rely on an educated guess where we can't even see or take a look at the drive ourselves.

To my best knoledge programs and files load quickly. What testing software would you recommend?

Hi there Confused Idiot,

As the HDD is making some weird sounds, you need to back up the data stored on it.
After that, you can attach the drive with different cables to a different port. In case the cables are longer, try to boot up when the HDD is not in the case so you can make sure it is the HDD which is making the noise.(not some loose screws, etc.)

Here are some HDD testing tools: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
