Why doesnt my sd card detect in my dell laptop 6400

i have put my sd card in the sd slot in my dell inspiron 6400 and nothing happens just makes a ping noise thats all

That laptop did not come with XP, did it? Does any CD card work? You might have a driver that still needs to be loaded for the SD card reader to work.
