sljackon : 10-2008 - 1-2009 RIP my friend...

I played for 3 months and loved it, aside from picking a crappy time to start playing because there were all these 70's when I started and then when I finally got up to around mid 60's, WOTLK came out ! BAHHH!

basically I was too busy playing WOW to focus on more important things. now that I'm not playing i get a little more sleep and my wife is more happy because she isn't left falling asleep on the couch while I run instances for 4 hours in a row.

*thread rises from the grave again*

I would certainly agree with people that complain about the graphics and repetitive nature of the game. I have played WoW since shortly after release and have desperately sought different MMOs, but all the others I've tried just don't have the full package.

The graphics are dated, but they work for the game/atmosphere. I've played EQ2 and Warhammer (which I had hoped would be much better) and the graphics for those, while realistic, are ugly. If I wanted realistic I'd go outside.

For people that play the game by themselves, what a nightmare. I'd be bored as hell. MMOs aren't really PUG games, they only seem worth the time when you bring your own people. 10-12 people in my guild I know irl, either from home or the military and it's honestly the easiest pasttime to keep in touch with your friends when you're scattered all over the world.

That aside, if you aren't into twitch gaming, or PvP, or platformers, or sims- not much left to choose from. What I don't understand is people that have the Bejeweled add-on- why play a free game inside a pay-to-play game?

Because they might be having fun? Just pullin this out of the hat of possibilities...

 Because I actually know someone personally that fits this category. Naturally they really like the game but I know for a fact they wouldn't mind at all having the ability to play 'newer' games. But with a ATI 9600, P4 2.8Ghz and 768Mb of RAM...not too many options for newer games...

For a game with real depth and player involvement try Terris: www.legendsofterris.com

Not full of geeks, just people interacting and enjoying themselves.

I've been a WoW subscriber since 2005 and I just stopped playing recently. I love the game but it's not much fun anymore since my work schedule doesn't permit me to have much time for raiding. I had been raiding end-game content since vanilla WoW, all through TBC and the first couple months of WotLK and had a blast. I was always guilded with a fun bunch of peeps. But now that I'm not raiding I have little to no interest in the game lately. My fiancee cancelled her account so that makes it even less appealing now. I guess it's time to move on but I had a lot of fun.

Im the 7th Best geared holy priest on my server
(i only know this cause there is a site that rates everyone lol)

i play wow about 5-10 hourse a day. i have a full time job and a life (inc. girl). ive been playing for years and have met many of my guildmates over the years in real life. i have never come across one person who was insane or "lifeless". warcraft is over all a social game, if your not playing it socially you fail. (just like life....) im sure there are many crazy people out there playing....but thats what the ignore list is for.

yes it is sorta a waste of time but lots of things are. know whats even a bigger waste of time? getting to 55 (or w/e the level cap is) 10 times then buying the next COD with a new number and picture of an army guy.

i like wow cause of its IN DEPTH game play and combat. its got everything you could want in a game. if you actually read a little the quests become a lot more interesting (omg a game with reading QQ) and every attack you make is based on stats and formulas and all that good stuff. and you dont know what team work is untill you and 24 other people do into uldar and try some of those bosses (i know some of ya have no clue what that is but its hard)

the biggest point i want to make to people who dont play warcraft is that leveling a character is not what the games about. once you get to 80 (highest level atm) the game just starts. if you dont have time to play even 5 hours a day there is no funner way to kill an hour of time then wow pvp.

paying 12 bucks a month does kinda suck....but at least i dont pay 50 bucks for a game with 1 disc worth a gameplay and content that never new.

i started in march 05, so ive payed blizzard about 460 dollers in monthy fees. (first month was free) but i havnt bought an xbox (came out later that year) or any of those 50 doller games sence. plus, id imagin its a plus when you bring a girl home and she dosnt see a xbox next to your tv.

To justanotherguy, 5-10 hours is way too much (IMHO). And what does having a girl have anything to do with having a life? There's plenty of single people (not me for the record) that 'have a life'.
To me WoW is a gear grind (coincidence you start your post with a gear comment? No.) where you already have your min/maxed skills for your class, rotation cycles, all layed out for you on some website/spreadsheet, so its a giant cookie cutter...
And I've seen the end part of a raid in RL, basically it was a total of several hours to let a random number let your know if you gain another piece of gear or not. If not, too bad, spend another 3 hours until you get lucky. I'm surprised the players 1 key was still working seeing as thats pretty much what they were pressing 95% of the time, with an occasional off click here and there.
PvP I can't talk about since I've never really seen it happen, but I do play WAR as a witchhunter and its very good (IMO). I'm constantly making choices for which skills to use at what time. In PvP I use just about every skill on my hotbar. There's no real gear grind (where it isn't a must have). I just don't see the fun in beating down AI scripts for hours on end unless its fast paced action packed Diablo 2'esq. The same goes for WAR too, the Public quests are I believe it's best at PvE and even that is something I would consider Good (because it's essentially a raid in < 30 minutes). I did a real 'raid' as well in a T3 zone and almost passed out from boredom. It basically came down to pull,DPS, repeat (Just like WoW). And with PvE your skills seem to be limited to a select few for the min/maxiness effectiveness.

Everything above however is just opinions and not facts. But it's pretty much how I feel about it. Take it or leave it.

Why do people lie?
Why do people instead drink every night, join gangs, kill other people or commit crimes?

Why do people have different tastes than others? I mean, if you think something is boring, obviously so does everyone else in this world.

People normally do stuff because it appeals to them. That does not mean everything you like will be liked by others, and vice-versa.

One of the biggest reasons people play World of Warcraft is because its CHEAP entertainment. Believe it or not, not everyone loves to go out to the bar, get sh*t faced and get a ticket on the way home while driving drunk. For $13/month, you get all the entertainment you need if you are into playing that type of video games.

TL;DR - different people like different things.

P.S. - I haven't touched that game for over a year, but its very narrow minded to think that just because something does not appeal to someone, it does not appeal to others either.

*** ing xbox 360 broke
and now i got into it, i dont play all day everyday, but if im bored i'll go on for a few hours, just like any other video game

and to whoever says its to easy, level a guy to 80 , see how long that *** takes you, to easy my ass hahaha

well said jalek... after a while you get bored and quit the game but if you stay out long enough for major patches to come in, it will be a totally different game again

There's a whole psychology behind online gaming, but what I can't understand is paying to play. If they're charging $X/month, why sell the game for $60?

Well, if they give you all that phat lewt, they figured they should get theirs. Plus many people seem to pay for it without asking. Also, the $15 monthly is for patches, fixes, server maintenance etc.

Because they can. Unless you're self sufficient living off the land and never pay for anything it's really kind of silly to ask why somebody would pay for something. And it's even sillier to ask why somebody would charge for something that people are willing to pay for.

The bottom line is that it's entertainment and a $40-$60 buy-in plus $15/month really isn't that much. Hell, a round of golf plus the cost of the balls I'll lose during that round will cost more than that for only a few hours of play time. Some people gawk at paying for MMOs because other games are a one time price. But then again there are even other games which cost nothing at all so why pay for the $60 one time purchase at all? Also I know people who buy brand new games on a weekly or monthly basis versus some MMO players who only ever play that one game. Assuming they spend the same amount of time playing games a month the MMO player is making out a lot better (financially) than person who is paying anywhere between 2 to 10 times as much a month to spend the same amount of time playing video games. Of course then you have the people who just torrent everything and laugh at us all. So it really is a silly question to ask "why pay to play".

Because:

A. There's so many games that you only pay for the game and get free online play,
and
B. There's so many games that you pay a monthly or micropay and get the game for free.

Wow thats a great topic to stir a stick in the mud.. Next time I want to ruffle peoples feathers I think I will start a similar thread.

Wow is a fun game. Best MMO out there right now, or at least appeals to widest audience.. The PvP is pretty decent, servers usually aren't too laggy. Well polished... Not too hardcore for most people, but has good endgame content.

I might still load it up once in a while if I wasn't married to someone who hates it =D

The better question to ask it... What has replaced it? LOTRO is fun early game, but mid-late game gets extremely dull. I got tired of running around alone for hours by myself shooting defenseless animals with magic arrows.

I have moved onto the strategy genre... Hope supcom 2 comes out sooner than later!!

well you really havent tried it it seems,i was on that thing for a year, and got on every day....got out of it though, very addicting might wanna stop your friend, its kinda dangerous, literally my bro stole a laptop from his friend just to play the damn thing,i gained alot of wait while playing cuz i didnt get much exersize, anyway your question is the same as "why do people like ice cream",they just do
