hey guys i just built this system and it seems to boot up pretty slow and just be a bit sluggish in general... bios is current as are drivers and its running stock speeds on windows xp64 sp2... using pentium D 640 3.0ghz as placeholder right now but its still a fast cpu...

it takes 40 seconds to restart the computer

and from restart to windows loading screen takes 16 seconds (decting drives and then showing the irq info for all devices) then another 42 seconds from windows loading screen to windows loading up. seems like a long time and things in general just seem sluggish compared to my old athlon 64 2.0ghz 3200+ system

here are my specs:

corsair 620wpsu
pentium 4 630 with tuniq tower
4gb corsair ballistix ddr2 800
samsung 500gb 3.0 sata
gigabyte p35-ds3r
2 samsung sata dvdrs
sound blaster xfi platinum
asus 8800gts 320

seems to run counterstrike source alright, and got a 4800 on 3dmark 06.

any suggestions or cocmments on why its being slow, or maybe its just my imagination? what else can i do to test its speed or speed the boot up and performance?

make sure your hard drive is on a separate controller/ channel from your slower ATA devices like your dvd-roms.

That might be what's slowing it down.

Or, maybe try installing the latest inf chipset utility front intel. Your mobo is nieeeeece.

Any way to disable the polling of all irq ports when my computer boots and why does windows take so damn long to boot? should I try with less ram or diff operating system?

Change "memtest on start-up" in BIOS to Qwikboot. If you have it on memtest it will go through the memory in all four sticks before continuing boot. This can take a while.

Try setting all drive detections manually instead of autodetect. Also set "none" for any Sata/IDE channels/devices you don't have so the system won't waste time trying to detect things that aren't there. Disable boot up floppy seek and enable quick boot. What do you mean by IRQ polling? Do you have many PCI devices that need initialising or something like that? You might have an option in BIOS that skips that part but have no idea what that would be. Here's a BIOS settings guide that has lots of info on what certain settings do exactly so give it a try.

Keep your windows registry and startup list clean of old settings windows might try to find while starting up and test your harddrive speed with sandra or something similar as Samsung does not have a good track-record for speedy harddrives.

here are some sandra benchmarks tell me if they seem too low?

7952 MIPS and 8242 MFLOPS seems right for the processor about on par with the pentium D 3.0ghz in their reference list.

multimedia cpu performance also looks to be about where it should be

HD performance: 76/mb/s random access time 16ms seems pretty good

ram bandwidth seems low compared to the rest of them... is this because i have 4gb?? im running the ram on stock voltage and stock timings (haven't lowered them to factory suggseted settings and upped voltage yet) : int buff'd isse2 4584mb/s float buff's isse2 4578m/s

for latency: 147ns speed factor: 97.9

Wow, your 3DMark06 score is low...look at my specs: I get 5026 at all stock settings.

Do you have 4 x 1Gb sticks of RAM or 2 x 2Gb sticks of RAM? Try using just 2Gb of RAM (2 sticks) and post your specs from CPUZ - i.e. RAM speed, latency, etc.

If you are that worried about it, try installing the 32-bit version of XP, and then benching it. Then you can at least compare your results to others. AFAIK XP64 will be slower to boot up.

4x1gb of ram and its probably makingm t6he system slower than it has to be, also the x64 is probably slower than the x32 version. the ram is running at stock ddr2 800 and with timings of 55518 or something like that. i haven't upped the voltage yet or set it to 4-4-4-12 like it should be but maybe that will improve the ram performance. As for the low 3dmark score its probably because the cpu or crappy 64bit nvidia drivers? i don't know i still get 60fps in counterstrike.

i lowered the timings and kept stock voltage and speed of ddr2

Try upping your ram voltage a little bit. I've heard of people using 4 1GB sticks needing to increase their voltage to keep things stable, and this could be your problem...

Wow 4800 is low for system with an 8800 GTS. My system has an X1950XT and I score just over 5700 in 3Dmark06 and an 8800 GTS should spank the hell out of my card - I've never used 64-bit though.

My gigabyte P35-DS3R also suffers from a slow bootup. There is no option for quick boot. Also i have noticed that on my Gigabyte P35-DS3R my download and upload speeds are signifacantly lower than they were with my old pc.

My P35-DS3R boots in about 15 seconds, only thing i did in bios was turn off the full page logo thingy.

I dont have any speed issues either with the built in NIC.

Did you format the hard drive when you installed the motherboard?

getting 3d marks to check

I don't find my boot up slow....it is slower once creative's stuff is installed. (2.5 windows bar passes vs like 5....its till not that slow....and it only boot up)

The audigy stuff is not multi core friendly. for example the ctsysvol will close slow(click close and it stays for a sec...and also causes explorer to run slower....but i doubt this effects X-fi users)...but once the affinity is set to one core only its all good.

My download speed for 3dmarks 2006 is 715k and thats about right for my ISP/multi computer house.

I do suggest you try to "msconfig" out stuff you don't use and see if its that helps any.

As said above make sure your ram has the right voltage. so 2.0 would be +0.2[since the default is 1.8...1.85 in speedfan] in the mit screen on the bios(after you hit ctrl + f! to get all the options). Since ram with low voltage will error often causing windows to re-write and read data allot...and it can corrupt your files....so that sucks. Also a blend test of prime may help show any errors....

EDIT
that 400 is 400 DDR(aka 800 on 1.8 volts....hmmmm with 4.4.4.12)?
you ratio should be 1:1...in mit gigabyte calls it 2...dont ask why its just called 2

Just so you know most low latency DDR2 uses 2.0 to 2.2 volts....

setting 2 will run it 1:1(looks like your cpu is a 800 fsb model so the ram will run @ 200 in cpu-z....you may even get 3,4,4,10 out of it themn). and 4,4,4,12 should be doable on 1.8. This works on my patriot(4,4,4,10) stuff but not ocz...it needs a little bump.

EDIT EDIT
8800GTX - 3dm 2006 12782(that may be part quad?)
Why are stats only online now?

Well, one thing I noticed is that you listed a Pentium D 640, no such thing exists. The proc you're thinking of is the Pentium 4 640. Single-core, which may be able to explain the lower benches. I'm not really sure if a P4 would be a bottle-neck for the 8800 though.

I would say fresh install is your answer. My system hasn't had a fresh install in almost 2 years and it runs like a champ, except for the network drivers taking a little while to load up after startup. Has anyone heard of this problem BTW? I would love to know why my drivers started getting slow in the past month, and how to correct it (without a fresh install).
