Why is World of Warcraft so popular?!

I don't really get it as well. Although world of warcraft is a multiplayer game with a lot of players, but i get bored after playing a while. I'm wondering if anybody feel the same.

I feel its due to being an MMO. I never really was interested or got into them. Years ago, early 2000's I heard they were awesome, this, that, and the other thing, my buddy played everquest on his PS2 all the time. I tried WoW personally with a 14 day trial and never got into. Believe it or not, one of the big cons imo was the art-work/design. I felt like I was in Disney Land or Wonderland (with Alice of course). I like a more serious tone to my games e.g. Warhammer (which I gave up on eventually as well) and Diablo II.

I want to finish playing Warhammer when I get time to, I have a level 24 or something. There's just so many games actually worth playing and the new ones keep coming out and I have to try all of them. I don't have time for disney land. Maybe if WOW could prove it was the best, then I'd play it.

I hear ya, but this is just to bring in scope on how little I play/get into an MMO (even one I actually liked). Basically I got Warhammer on release date. I have three characters, a Rank 31ish witch hunter, 10~15 warrior priest, 3~6 slayer. Combined in time from release to today I probably have spent less than week 168 hours total. Some WoW players probably break that barrier in less than a month, let alone almost a year. I also played EVE online for a year but that got old shortly after. People who say its a PvP centric game are full of it (who builds your fancy ships/mods? Oh what? Your seven alts?) which brings another point. If you have a lot of money to spend you get a legitimate advantage. By legitimate I mean not against the EULA. But ya, as you can tell I just don't get along with MMO's, I believe if you an RPG you should have X amount of playtime and the game ends. Unless your extremely creative.

Not going to read through all the posts of trolls/fanbois and just going to answer the question.

WoW is so popular becuase of

1. Ease of use. Any person, new or vet to MMORPG, can play wow and be relativly secussful and have things to do. WoW has a very soft learning curve.

2. Amount of content. WoW has so much content, that you can literally spend hundereds of days playing (actual days, not 2 hours on tuesday = 1 day) and not see or experience everything. There is something that suites everyones taste from hard core raid instances, to small grouping, to large and small scale pvp, to even economics (using the auction house).

3. Blizzard catering to casual players. This, IMO, is the primary reason for the success of WoW. Blizzard abandoned the "you have to be hardcore to win" mentality in place of, "everyone deserves to win". In vanilla WoW (prior to any expansions), only a small portion of the players got to see the end game content (naxx specifically). Blizzard has changed this and now anyone can go in and see the same content. Hardcore players can choose to do encounters in a different way, which makes it harder and they are rewarded better, but "noobs" can usually still get things done.

4. They listen to their player base. Though it may not always seem like it, blizzard keeps in touch with its playerbase and usually adds in things that people want to see/have.

Well there's no winning or losing in WOW only in level 80 raids which brings on the cocky I spent more time than you so I'm better mentality that ruins the spirit of competitive gaming. I bought more gear and gold than you so I'm better. I bought a pre-leveled 80. Wow great work. Did I mention I have a 3 thousand dollar sound system?

By winning I mean getting that piece of gear you want, or killing that boss that you've been stuck on or seeing that raid instance that you've been dieing to see.

I always get a kick out of people who complain that MMOs "never end" or can't be beaten. Well, "duh" that's kind of the point and if you didn't know that going in that's your fault.

There are lot's of linear and finite games out there, including many RPGs. But MMORPGs are more or less the holy grail of open ended gameplay. They would really suck if people could play for some amount of time and essentially beat the game. Player turnover would skyrocket and pretty much kill off the MM part of MMORPGS. They would just be multiplayer RPGs - which already exist if that's what you are looking for.

I like the fact that I can just pop in and out of WoW as I like without having to feel like I didn't accomplish something or fell too far behind in the game. I have friends who always play WoW, but I can pretty much just jump in every few months get a little help leveling/gearing up and I'm right on par with them. But at the same time they find plenty of things to do in the game to keep them active in it just about every day. I think that's a big part of why WoW is so successful.

You mean buying what you want from a seller. Respect is only earned. You don't buy it. You have no proof you didn't buy a piece of gear or level a character to max. Trash gaming for trash players.

Because online respect and e-peen matters. The sole purpose of almost all video games is for entertainment purposes. Do what you enjoy. Him buying gear doesn't personally effect you, so why should you care how he got it? Only losers who have nothing to be proud of in real life care about achievements in video games.

Yeah right look at T-squared he is a pro video gamer. There's so many people who would bust your lip at any game that really matters or would get a thrill out of knocking you out if you want to be a troll about it. People, you don't know, other people.

Could you please enlighten me to which video games "really matter"?

And please tell me how T-squared's respect means anything to anyone remotely important in this world. Your grammar and punctuation is horrendous (though it is very amusing to see someone TRY and use commas, but fail horribly), so I’m going to assume you are meaning “bust my lip” and “knock me out” in the virtual sense. Again, like I said before, how does this matter in anyway what-so-ever? The only people that care about other video game players are 16 year old fanbois.

If you meant bust my lip in the literal sense, I would invite probably 99% of people playing video games at a competitive level to step up and try it. I’m not going to rant and rave about who I am on the internet (since everything online is made up anyway, right?) but I assure you, I am more than capable of taking care of myself in a fight.

That goes for people, I don’t know, other people, all people. < in case you can’t tell, this is making fun of you.

Watch the words that come out of my mouth. NOOB. We don't like creepy people. In case you didn't notice, your the laughing stock of gaming with 0 respect.

I don't play World of Warcraft bu I really want to try it even just one. But my PC can't handle WoW's graphics. 🙁

Hmmm, was this a stealth stab response to my earlier post? At any rate this is why/how I think/believe MMO's are all fundamentally flawed, they don't end, its like an ongoing game of monopoly. They are meant to be long and grindy and just too cumbersome. I understand that if an MMO was to actually "End" there wouldn't be a point to playing, but this is where I find games like Diablo and Titan Quest great, they end, but you can still have fun after the game is beat.

But remember there is a semi-end to the game, that being "end-game" content aka raids, aka do the same skill rotation 9000+ times for several hours to let a random number generator decide whether or not the last several hours of your time spent were worth it. Ya.

But I will say as a disclaimer that the above statements are purely my opinion and is no way written in stone as facts. I'm just a shoot-em-up, RTS, fast paced person in the gaming sense.

No, I didn't mean my comments as a stab at anyone in particular, just as a general comment on a complaint I often here. I do disagree with your opinion of the never-endingness of MMOs being a flaw. I guess it depends on what you consider a flaw. If you call keeping players playing a game longer than what most other genres average and getting them to pay a monthly fee to do so a flaw, then yeah you're right. But to me that would seem to be a huge success. Sure it will turn some people off from the game, but those aren't the people who make up the player base of most MMORPGs. And I'm not knocking people who don't like that type of never ending play - I actually feel that way myself most of the time. But when I hear people who are admittedly not really MMORPG fans criticize the open-ended-never-ending gameplay of these games it's kind of like hearing somebody who isn't a FPS fan complain that those games are flawed because all you do is run and shoot and rely on twitch reflexes.

What are you even trying to say here? Watch the words coming out of my mouth? LOL. And in what way have I been "creepy". You're the one talking about having internet respect and I'm the laughing stock of gaming. How on earth would you know what any of my game tags are?

Anyway, I'm starting to think you are just a troll due to your horrible spelling/grammar and lack of ability to construct a real sentence.

To the real topic on hand, I wouldn't say WoW is that much different than Diablo with regards to it "ending". I've never played Diablo for any extended period of time, so I can't really say first hand, but I would think that it's similar to WoW in the fact that it never ends, but you can beat it. In Diablo, I assume there is a final boss that when you beat him, you've beaten all the current content. That’s the same as it is in WoW. For example, in Vanilla WoW, once you defeated Naxx you had “beaten the game” until a new content patch game out. Same in TBC with Illidan for most of it and then Sunwell. When you say you can “beat a game” and/or “reach the end”, I take it to imply that you have nothing else to do. I think that’s where MMOs excel in the fact that you have goals and challenges, yet once you complete them, there is still something that you can occupy yourself.

FPS are fun, but the only goal is to really outscore the other players in the current game. FPS really only take off once you get in a clan/guild and start doing clan matches (probably some of most fun I’ve had in games period).

Like many have said, WoW is a little cartoony, but that doesn’t take away the fact that it is extremely entertaining and playable. The graphics aren’t the best out there, but the game has been out for almost 5 years now. I personally think the graphics and spell effects in WoW are just as good, if not better in most cases with WAR. Sure they could look a little less cartoony.

Like I would really take the time to check spelling and punctuation for a Piece of sh*t WOW player. That's right you're nobody and I win due to a technicality. Sorry.

You’re not fooling anyone bpogdowz. We all know you don’t check your spelling, grammar and punctuation because you’re a 15 year, little boy, who suckles at your parents teats for everything. Also, please point out where I said I was a WoW player? I didn’t, because I’m not, moron. Every time you make a post, you make yourself sound stupider and stupider, so do us all a favor and stop posting. I’m guessing your contempt for WoW players comes from the fact that your parents won’t pay the $15 a month for you to play it, huh?

Though I’m sure your very accustomed to winning due to technicalities (probably the only way you ever win anything), please get your facts straight before making before making yourself look even stupider.

And you’re right. I am nobody, and I’m everybody, when it comes to the internet. Just as we all are. You should consider yourself extremely lucky that the anonymity the internet provides makes you a nobody, or else I’m sure you would have been ridiculed to suicide for your stupidity.

I own you and your fake stupid mask. You wish you were me. You're just jealous. Fact is, I'm better than you and most every one else and everyone knows it. It saddens me to see such lamers go on about how their so big and tough offline, but yet they can't back it up.

Talking about how lamers sadden you. So this must include you. Cause your doing exactly that.

This game was designed by people who spent 3 years studying the current mmos of the early 90s. The game is designed to give back to the what the user puts into it. If you work hard, you can get nice mounts or great achvs...toss this in with guilds and friends, and well the possiblities are endless. With the choice of 2 factions and 5 races within each...then chose ur class....the paths of adventure really can go on and on ....I started a few years ago and never intended to still be playing. I have a life, i serve in the us navy........This game is not fun for those who dont take the time to learn it. The most current issue of Gamer Magazine still rated world of warcrack, er warcraft as the most popular mmo of all time boasting over 15mil subscribers. They lost 100k over this new expansion, but 15mil minus 100k is a joke! I personally love it!
