Why so crap?

just installed my new 2800 barton and now my memory setting in the BIOS have changed. I previously had an XP2100+ and the memory timings have changed from 6,2,2,2T to 7,3,3,2.5T!? I thought Hmmm, booted into windows anyway, ran 3DMark 2001se. My prev score with the 2100 and other mem settings were about 10380/10400. Now my score has only increased to 11177 thats less than a thousand is that all i should expect for a move to a 2100pal to 2800bart? also would tose memory timings be having a major effect?

Would the fact that the FSB on the 2100 be lower mean that the mem was running slower too? alowing faster timings?

I would be grateful for any light people can shed on this.

I think you must upgrade your RAMs to PC3200 or better (400MHz or higer) if your mobo supports it. Due to the increase on fsb, clock settings of RAMs must have been lowered.

wat ram do you have? my guess is you have generic cheapo pc2700 with very loose timings. when you were running the xp2100 the fsb and thus the ram speed was 266. this allows your ram to run at faster timings than running the same stick at 333. thats why your ram timings are slower. get some good pc3200

I have 1xstick of Cruicial and 1xCheapo. Is it really worth going all out for Big stuff like Corsair XMS or is Kingston and crucial just as good...(kind of turned into a memory thread now...sorry CPU Guys.) and is getting paired memory worth it or is it all hype?

would I be better off just having the one 512Mb of Crucial? bearing in mind I will lose Duall Chennel mode if I do.

whats with everyone recomending pc3200...

pc2700 will be fine...and personally i think what you have now is fine too...

If you increase the dimm voltage by .1 - .2 volts i am pretty sure you could run cas 2 just fine...timmings really mean very little with ddr ram however...clock speed is what matters...

Only get pc3200 if you see yourself overclocking in the future...

If you are not overclocking...just stick with the value stuff...which prolly has the same timmings you are running now...memory timmings went out the window when DDR came out...it is much more forgiving to bad timmings...

If you are or plan to overclock...then XMS/hyper x may be worth it...

One final question if you have a sec. The 3DMark scores I mentioned earlier, are they what I should expect from such an upgrade? I have seen scores on the 3DMark website with people running 2100's slightly Overclocked raking in over 12K and some only had 256Mb of Ram and DX8.1 :frown:

remember 3d mark is NOT a cpu benchmark...it is mainly a graphics card benchie...it is effected very little by cpu upgrades...they are probably using high end gpus...

Yeah, piii_Man is right. 3DMark scores is mainly affected by the graphics card and not by the CPU. Just to give you an example, i was getting 2750 3DMark 2001 points with my Athlon 700MHz & GeForce2 GTS. After I upgrade to Athlon XP 1800+ I went up to 4300 but the real increase was when I upgraded to a Radeon 9500 Pro, when I jumped all the way up to 11k. So I believe your increase should be normal.

Nah they were using Ti4200's too! and mine is OC'd to 280/565. Snot Fair! (stomps around like an angry 2yr old :frown: - :lol:

yes it is...especially with AA and AF enabled it really pulls away...

BTW...when you did the benchies...did you turn off AA and AF?

I reckon he would get about 27 3DMarks w/ a geforce4 generation card, if he had 4xAA & 8xAF... :lol:

Yes, if I had to choose between the two I would deffinetely go for the Radeon 9500 Pro. But if you are thinking of upgrading from your Ti4200 to a R9500Pro then I believe that it doesn't worth it. Simply save your money and wait a few more months for an upgrade of your graphics card.
