Why wont my windows XP detect my 1 GB SD card?

Ok I have a Windows XP HP mini laptop computer with a built in card reader, I could download cards before and they would download just fine, then about two weeks ago I noticed it didn't download the card, so I downloaded it to another computer and it ws fine. But now, I can't download anything! my USB 4 GB thumbdrive, my SD memory card, anything. Also I can't download on to the memory stick.
If you could tell me what's wong I would greatly appreciate it.

PS.
My computer wont shut down the right way too, it says it's shutting down and will take...30 mins before I turn it off. this started after downloading a Adobe update.

Plug in your SD card, and check the device manager to see if there are any conflicts.

Check the event viewer for errors or warnings timestamped at the time you're trying to shut down.
