I'm toying with the idea of buying an Acer AL2032WM TFT monitor which uses a
native resolution of 1680X1050 (16:9 aspect ratio). Will Windows XP be able
to render this in the proper ratio?

Thanks.

That's completely up to your video card and has little to do with the
operating system. Check the make and model of your video card for support
for that resolution.

Good Luck,

Thanks to both for replying - much appreciated.

I have a Gigabyte 5900XT (128MB RAM) which seems to allow for custom
resolution settings, according to its manual. Do you think this is 'good
enough'? My current mobo is only AGP 4 and I'd rather not fork out for a
card until I buy a Vista powered machine towards the end of next year.
However, ................

Consider a very good video card.

Yes, that's a very good video card. Make sure you install
the latest drivers for it:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_77.72.html

Also, download and install the new Microsoft ClearType Tuner Powertoy:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

And in getting such monitor, make sure you can locate a driver for it. Not
only do you need a video card driver that wll allow to send to the display,
you need to tell the monitor how to display.
