I bought a wifi adapter and it started work when I plugged it in even though instructions tells to me to install the driver from the CD that came with the adapter.

So I wonder why do I need this driver from that CD.

Solution
Windows 10 has a "basic" networking driver built-in, to allow you to get online.

Sometimes Windows will do a good job of finding the appropriate driver (especially if you have a generic USB device from a no-name vendor) BUT, typically, manufacturer drivers are the best fit*.

*I wouldn't use any driver that comes on a disk in 2018 - they're usually extremely outdated, and the vendors website is the best source of the latest driver.
