will a gtx 970 work in a HP 1520t

I have heard stories about how some GPUs don't work in HP computers because of a bios problem, but I do have a good enough PSU for it and enough space, but I don't want to buy it until I now for sure it will work with the bios, the bios version it said was Ami 8.14, if anyone could help me out I would be grateful, and if it's not compatible, what's the best GPU I could get?

Then you should be fine. All graphics cards should work on all motherboards. These days in a pcie2.0 or 3.0 and x16 or x8 pcie slot.

There is no guarantee that the newer cards will run in prebuilts , even with the right power.

There are DELL and hp threads all over the forums where they just won't run.

Some people have no issues others try everything and no dice.

Oops I forgot to mention that I already put in a 750 ti, I don't know if that will help get closer to a conclusion, but thanks for the answers so far

if your 750ti works fine then there should be no problem for the 970

If the 750ti works you have a better shot at the 970 working.
