Hi all

Been browsing these forums last few days to try and find out but thought i would just ask.

I'm thinking about buying a new graphics card ready for swtor and was wondering if it will work with my computer as it's pretty old.

Im looking at the XFX HD 6850 1gb. (think this is the best for my £100 budget)

I have an ----- Asus P5LD2-VM DH motherboard
Intel core 2 duo 6600 2.4ghz
Earthwatt 500w psu
4gb RAM
Windows 7
and currently: Nvidia 8800GT 512mb

So if anybody knows wether this 6850 will work, would be great.
Thanks

If you are going to replace 8800gt with 6850 for performance, than you will not get huge difference unless you upgrade your cpu or overclock it. Your cpu will bottleneck 6850, even it will bottleneck 6770 card (Depending on games).

So my recommendation is to buy a new cpu if you can or overclock it slightly. Cause you will not be happy when you see low performance on games like witcher 2/fable 3.

It will work, but the Core 2 6600 CPU will Bottleneck the 6850. The CPU is not a decent CPU right now, but overclocking will reduce bottlenecking effects. Try Overclocking it to 3.0 Ghz and you will mostly see a performance increase, and make sure you do it correctly.

If you don't know what is bottlenecking, it's when a computer component doesn't let other components to work as it should be. In your case it's the Core 2 6600 who doesn't let 6850 to work as it should be.

And oh yea, for your information if you are running at stock clock with Core 2 6600 the 6850's performance will not be as far as you imagine compared to 8800gt!

Hope this helps. Good luck on buying the GPU and Overclocking the CPU:).

Hi

Thanks all for the responses. I am indeed aware of bottlenecking, and thought that this would be the case. however it is mainly for playing SWTOR and i hear thats more gpu intensive rather than cpu.

I can't afford a CPU upgrade until perhaps another 6 or so months so i shall give the overclocking a go. Any good guides into doing this?

Thanks again

Just overclock your cpu and you will be fine, as far as guides go have a look at the overclocking section in Toms or post a question for it in overclocking and someone would be able to help you.

Hi there, I found A nice video on youtube showing how you should OC an intel core duo.

Hope this helps, You can give any questions I might answer them.

Here is an useful link:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/259899-11-core-overclocking-guide

It might help. But you need a good aftermarket cooler for your cpu. CM Hyper 212+ is very good at low price.

For overclock, you need to push up FSB, set memory voltage @ default, PCIe clock @ 100mhz and lowering system memory multiplier as if memory frequency dont pass its default clock. Its the basic for OC. For further support do as monsta says.

Thanks again for the overlock follow ups. I dont think i've ever had this much help from any forum ever.

From reading a bit it seems i could probably get away with going from 2.4 to 3.0ghz
and it doesn't look to hard to do.

I just ordered my graphics card on a good Christmas sale price. I think i'll wait til that arrives and then run my cpu as normal for now on swtor, see how it goes and increase by overclocking as neccessary. Seems the best idea.

Also one last question for anybody still feeling helpful, i notice that my monitor and this new card both have dvi and hdmi, which should i use to connect them up?

Thanks again all of you

I'm selling an e8400 3ghz and zalman CPU cooler if you want to upgrade. You should be able to overclock it higher than your processor. I'm asking $105+shipping but I'll do $90+shipping if you like 😉.
