Will a HDMI-VGA cable work with my GPU.

So in the past I used a VGA cable on my monitor(VGA/DVI-D monitor 24inch)and I connected it to my PC with an DVI adapter(passive),and now that I got a new gpu I can't use that same cable anymore, I checked and used my TV and HDMI cable there and its all great but I need to know if an HDMI-VGA(because I have one at my dads place)cable can work, or I'll have to buy a DVI-D cable the normal one..

Use DVI-D cable (if your graphics card has DVI-D output and monitor has DVI-D input).
