I'm looking into making a second PC for streaming, and I've considered many options for CPU. I'm down to two. Either an i3-4160 or Xeon E3-1231 v3. My main concern here though is will the Xeon work in a a regular motherboard instead of a server motherboard?

Thank you all in advance for your help!!

Each motherboard has a CPU Support List which details what processors (Intel Core and/or Xeon) are compatible. You will need to find a motherboard that serves every other purpose you need and then check the CPU Support List to see if the Xeon processor is compatible with it.

Okay, here is exactly what I need: I'm building a second PC for the purpose of streaming. I would like to have a quad core with hyperthreading to achieve this, but I don't want an i7. The Xeon E3-1231 v3 is a quad core with hyperthreading, and it also doesn't have onboard video which was a feature I definitely can live without as I have a discrete graphics card that will do the video processing for me.
