I recently backed up my external hard drive that had all off my steam games on it using acronis true image, today I broke it, if I buy a new one and restore the files onto my new hard drive will my steam games work? Or will they have to be reinstalled? Also, if I restored them would I lose the save games?

Hey there Bibbers. I don't know if this would work out, but you have no other option except to try it out.
I would recommend that from now on you use Steam's Backup Feature for that purpose: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8794-yphv-2033
As for the save game files, they should be OK. The files are stored in your user folder which is on your C: drive (by default) and each time you play, the saves are updated on the cloud as well: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2066503

Hope that helps.

Well having in mind that you've already bought them and can always reinstall them, it would be probably easier and better if you just do that. When it comes to games, I'm a bit overly cautious sometimes, if I were you, I'd go to the save game files' directory and back them up, even if they're still on the cloud as well. 😀

I probably will just reinstall them, I have 100 down and unlimited bandwidth so it shouldn't really matter, as long as I don't lose save games I don't really mind, I really don't want to restart games that I have 100+ hours in like skyrim and Payday 2, thanks for your help!

Sure thing, mate. I know what you mean, especially when it comes to Skyrim. I love that game and I've spent probably more than 200 hours for the two times I've played it from scratch (1 - when it came out and 2 - including all DLCs). Just make sure you have backed up your saved game files from the computer, just in case - and you should be OK. :)
