So will gtx 770 work on these slots. I have an hp compaq 8300 elite.

you have the proper slot yes, BUT if you have not upgraded the power supply it is not good enough/does not have the power cables to run that 770

But isn't it a first generation slot because on the requirement page for gtx 770 it say it needs PCI Express 3.0
https://www.asus.com/ie/Graphics-Cards/GTX770DC2OC2GD5/specifications/

3.0 is backwards compatible

also that is an 2.0 x16 slot

How did you deduce that?

The PCI slot is part of the answer. If you do not have the mini tower HP computer, the GTX 770 will not fit in the case - it will plug into the slot but the graphics card will be too big for the slimline cases.

And you will need a 600 watts or higher PSU of good quality.

You mean this? I have this.

OK - Use this as a guide and get a good 600 watts or higher PSU from Tier 1 or Tier 2 - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

You will notice that sometimes there will be lower pricing on 650 watts or 750 watts PSUs - this is because of those PSUs being more popular in sales and produced in higher volumes.

In situations like this I will personally go for a 750 or an 850 watts PSU; just my personal choice. The computer will draw only the power that it requires.

by the cpu's that model can have

I have picked evga 650w g2 80 + gold psu, is that fine?

Yes, perfect!
