Will Intel DX79TO support Intel Xeon e5-1620 processor?

Hi,

I wonder if DX79TO motherboard by Intel will support Xeon e5-1620 processors once they are available to buy?

I ask this because I like this board the most from all x79 family and others like all Asrock mobos or some Asus already claims that they do support these processors. Intel site doesn’t mention it, but I think that is because no Xeon are yet available.

Other thing is if there will be need for firmware/BIOS update to support Xeon? If yet, it is possible to upgrade firmware if I won’t have any socket2011 processors supported by old firmware?

Right now no, the Intel DX79TO does not support the Xeon CPUs. Yes, you will need a BIOS version that properly supports the (any) Xeon. Most but not all, I've seen an ASRock post and boot with a LGA 2011 Xeon, do require a Xeon CPUID in order to post/boot. So if the MOBO ships with a pre-Xeon BIOS then you'd more than likely need a supported CPU to update the BIOS or send the MOBO back to the OEM e.g. Intel.

The ASUS P9X79 WS supports the Intel Xeon E5-1620 as of BIOS BIOS 0802 revision http://usa.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_2011/P9X79_WS/#CPUS However, the ASUS P9X79 WS supports a very cool feature 'USB BIOS Flashback' - http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE/ that only requires a USB Flash drive and a PSU (i.e. no CPU, RAM, GPU, etc) is required to update the BIOS!!! :)

I'm not a fanboy of any Intel MOBOs, and I don't keep up if the DX79TO will or will not support Xeon, but a tell tale indication is if both ECC and non-ECC RAM is supported by the MOBO itself and according to this link both types are - http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/dx79to/sb/CS-032853.htm

Yes, that's exactly what I think. The manual to this board says that ECC is supported only if CPU supports it. And since regular i7 (3820 for instance) processors don't support ECC then... Xeon should be supported :)

Yes, I also saw the Asus WS supported processors, but it is also twice as expensive as intel. I could even consider it, as I'm building new workstation, but there is not much difference between them.

My requirement is to support e5-16xx processors, 8 banks of ram, a raid controller, usb3.0, sata6. Sas controller would be nice for the future, but for now it is not required.

I don't know why asus is better. Could you tell me what are key advantages of buying Asus WS instead of Intel DX79?
 
Intel MOBO's simply are built cheaply, like a cheapo reference GPU vs an overbuilt rock-solid OC'ing GPU. An alternative LGA 2011 MOBOs are Supermicro - http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon3000/#2011 , ASRock X79 Extreme9 - http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=X79%20Extreme9&cat=Specifications

I understand what you want and I 'get' money, there's no Mr. Wizard here that has 1/2-off coupons. I've built several ASUS based Workstations and it's 'my' choice to use. Price an HP Workstation, it'll make you feel all better... :)
 
Jaquith I think you are being a little unfair with that statement. Our boards aren't "cheaply built", they are one of the most stable boards that you can get your hands on, but they are not one of the more feature rich boards for overclocking. It comes back to a design outlook. Our engineers think that a stable board is more important than the ability to get 200MHz more out of an overclock.

Granted, the Intel X79's are indeed an improvement. I've seen more MOBO's than I even care to remember, and like it or not the Intel's are the most 'sparse' MOBO's out there and in leagues with most (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, etc) budget lines.

Fairly, it's been years since I owned an Intel MOBO, and it's been for good reason.

I don't feel like engaging into a 'how bad they are' argument or discussion nor rehashing your prior recommended MOBO's... 😉

Further, with X79 I find overwhelming evidence to stick with ASUS above all others until I see some fix'n'.
 
The product manual for the DX79TO does state that it supports LGA2011 Xeons and ECC. See page 9.

Intel isn't the only one to bury the info deep in their manual.

The ASUS looks pretty good to me.

Do the DX79xx mobos support the E5-16xx CPUs today? The product guide says Xeon processors are supported, however the compatibility tool on the Intel web site does not list any Xeon processors.

Is a BIOS update required for the Product Guide to be true?
